Realm has been chosen by the Almighty to show the way... even if it was done in a back-doored fashion.

i.e. what sport are we talking about... what was the score... who played and who didn't.... any injuries that limited a players time... did Tim go ape shit??
These are the questions Realm needs to know.

Especially on how critical the off sides on Springer turned out. The dam broke with that one call. No doubt.

"I see it as a great challenge," Miner cornerback Antwon Blake said. "They have a hurry-up, high-tempo offense. They're a top-ranked team and we can see how WE stack up.Antwon is correct... we NOW have a better idea of how we stack up. We're a good team... but this type of good(Overall 4-4 with 1-3 in conference play) ONLY gets you a 4th place standing in the Cusa West division.
Losing the entire offensive front line usually means a rebuilding year... AND We're clearly better than that with the addition of talented Juco transfers.
BUT we lost 31- 13 to USM... AND it wasn't as close as the score would indicate.
Another opportunity to show REAL improvement wasted.
Utep had no running game to speak of... and we were becoming too predictable with QB Nick Lamaison having to pass for crucial yardage.
At the onset of the game, Utep and USM traded scores and ended the half tied at 10-10... but a funny thing happened with USM's first score. So Miss was robbed of a touchdown when the Refs said the endzone catch was out of bounds... even though the replay shows the USM receiver was clearly inbounds.
At the start of the 2nd half, USM came out looking hungrier & more aggressive than Utep. USM scored first to take the lead and never looked back. USM played on Utep's timid and predictable play calling and exposed Utep's weakness time and time again.
Bad habits are the hardest to shake... and Utep's(poor tackling, dumb defensive penalties, over emphasis on the passing game) bad habits are never too far behind when a worthy opponent stares Utep in the face and doesn't blink.
USM scored 21 points in the 2nd half to Utep's 3.
Considering where we were supposed to be at the beginning of the year... 4th place in the Cusa West sounds like an achievement of sorts.
Too bad you can't BRAG about it to anyone....
It was also plain to see that Utep's attendance(24,906) woes have not improved. The TV shots picked up a lot of empty seats despite Utep's best efforts to fill them with heavy discounted ticket prices.
As bad as last year's Sun Bowl attendance was... and despite all the ticket promotions we have had this year(date night, $10 tickets, weather associated ticket reductions) we are on track to beat that record. 2 of our 4 home games this year have been against ranked teams... and that is NOT enough of an attraction for El Pasoans to come out and support their team.
As MinerMan said... the FANS HAVE SPOKEN !!

What can I say except that Utep completely dominated this game despite the closeness of the score (Utep 31- CSU 17)
DEFENSE... DEFENSE.... DEFENSE.....
Utep's DEFENSE shut down CSU's running and passing attack and continually hounded CSU's QB(Pete Thomas) all night long. They wound up sacking him 7 times AND I'll bet he didn't sleep well that night either.
OFFENSE... OFFENSE.... OFFENSE.....
Utep ran well.... they passed well... they executed their plan to near perfection. Maybe the best ALL-AROUND effort I've ever watched.
CSU is not a great team... but they are a solid team and Utep showed they were several notches over them in every category.
In summary, Utep took CSU's lunch money and wanted more... THE DESIRE WAS THERE !!
Something I haven't seen in a Miner uniform in a great while.

My only point is it is okay for someone to be an unquestionable fan. Just like I defend you and MinerMan at the other forums. It works both ways. If you want to be a realist or a cheerleader, doesn't matter, just be who you are. My only point. Mista Mista, I wasn't pointing a finger at you... Really pointing a finger at myself and trying to explain why I seem so bitter when I post. I am cursed with this need to be Honest with how I see things. Too many people read my post and come away with the impression that I'm negative, accusatory, mean-spirited... which is NOT the case at all. Totally Opposite Really... But it is kind of entertaining having this Jeckyl-Hyde thing going on in people's minds. Mista Mista... You're fine the way you are and I imagine our perceived negativity towards Utep must wear you down. Don't let it !! You're very much appreciated here and you give our forum legitimacy. San Diego Union Tribune article also mentions at bottom of article a potential Utep recruit -- Winston Shepard.
Aztecs, Polee not getting hopes up for waiver
This much is certain: If Dwayne Polee somehow is granted a waiver to play this season for San Diego State, he won’t sit on the bench.
The St. John’s transfer has been among the most impressive players during the first week of men’s basketball practice, which makes the likely outcome of his planned petition to the NCAA all the more frustrating.
“Right now,” Polee admitted, “it’s not looking too good.”
Transfers must sit out a season before being eligible, and the basis of Polee’s request for a hardship waiver is that he transferred from St. John’s in New York to be closer to Los Angeles and his mother, who is undergoing a second surgery for an undisclosed ailment.
The NCAA almost never grants such waivers, although it did Thursday to junior Lamont “Momo” Jones in his transfer from Arizona to New York's Iona under similar circumstances. Jones is from New York City and transferred, he said, because he wanted to be closer to his ailing grandmother (who raised him).
SDSU is already 0-for-1 on NCAA eligibility petitions this year. In August, 6-foot-11 center Brian Carlwell was denied a sixth year in what appeared a reasonable request following severe head injury in a near-fatal car accident during his freshman season at Illinois.
“Mrs. Polee is still getting some information, some statements from her doctors,” Fisher said. “We want to have everything in order before we file it. But I think the NCAA will rule on it pretty quickly.
“I told Dwayne we’re going ahead with it but not to get disappointed if it doesn’t work out. The way we’re looking at it is, it would be an early Christmas present if he gets to play this season.”
Said the 6-7 Polee, who has three years of eligibility remaining: “If it happens, great. If we don’t get it, I’ll just have to sit this year out and get better.”
Injury report
The Aztecs can suit up only nine scholarship players this season, and on Thursday they were down to seven during contact drills. Sophomore Chase Tapley has a sprained ankle, and 6-8 junior college transfer Deshawn Stephens “tweaked” the same knee last Saturday that required minor surgery in September.
Of the two, Stephens appears the more worrisome. Fisher said “if we had a game today, Tapley would play.” Stephens, though, is being eased back to live action and might not participate in a full practice until next week. He’s also wearing a brace on the knee.
“They chose to be cautious with it,” Fisher said. “He’s seen Dr. (Christopher) Behr and he doesn’t think there is anything wrong. So for a while, we’ll be babying him a little bit.”
Stabbing incident
The campus party that turned ugly earlier this month, resulting in Aztecs football player Jay Waddell being stabbed in the stomach, reportedly was attended by SDSU basketball players. Sophomore Jamaal Franklin, according to Waddell, took off his shirt to help stop the bleeding.
Fisher, though, has absolved his players of any wrongdoing.
“We’ve looked into all that,” Fisher said. “To me, that is a nonissue for us. We’ve done our due diligence internally and externally, and I can say our guys were not involved. What happened was not created by our guys.”
Recruiting update
Matt Wilms, a 7-footer from Findlay Prep in Las Vegas, cancelled a scheduled visit during the blackout weekend and has been noncommittal about whether he will reschedule it. Another Vegas-based player, Ben Carter of Bishop Gorman, also cancelled a visit and appears headed to Utah or Oregon.
But SDSU remains in the mix for yet another Findlay Prep product: Winston Shepard, rated the 10th best small forward in his class by Rivals.com. Shepard visited New Mexico last weekend but didn’t commit and is said to be scheduling a trip to SDSU. Oklahoma State, UTEP and UNLV are on his short list as well, although Shepard has indicated he might wait until the spring to sign a letter of intent.

Bleed... as I read this... this is just for football only.
4 Geographical Divisions(with Boise, Hawaii, UCF, Houston, and SMU noticeably absent):
1. UNLV/SDSU/Fresno/Nevada
2. UTEP/U New Mexico /Colorado State/Wyo
3. Rice/Tulane/Tulsa/So Miss
4. Memphis/Marshall/ECU/UAB
Utep's dream of winning a football conference title just became TWICE as tough to do...
A conference with 16-20 members is why the MEGA-WAC broke up many years ago... and now here we are again.
I'm wondering... is the intention of this football league merger to guarantee access to the BCS bowls??

During my youth in El Paso... I can remember exiting the school grounds and protesting the E.P. school district rules concerning the length of hair on male students.
In High School, I marched in protest of the war in Vietnam.
Marching on the Utep campus as part of the Students for a Democratic Society.
Surrounding the Utep Police Security Building in an attempt to release an older gentleman with chants of "Free GrandPa".
Ahhhh.... Good Times. The disenchantment of youth, eh??
Time to Stand UP for something again...
This weekend I will be marching with the Occupy Wall Street movement in Phoenix. I stand with others who feel that NOT ENOUGH has been done to support the 99% who have suffered as the result of the recession that grips this nation.
I'm fortunate in that I have a job... but I know too many friends who do not and cannot find work. I feel it is a personal duty to stand up now and march for those who feel they are NOT BEING heard.
In addition to my marching, I have withdrawn $100K from my CHase account in support of the movement's goals in making Wall Street aware of the power of the people.
Little things... Bigger things.... they all add up. Together, eventually, they have to make themselves felt.

With Utep at 2 -3 and Tulane at 2-4... my first thought was this game is going to be a pillowfight...But as I look at Tulane more closely... I think they are more solid than first appearances would show.
Tulane narrowly lost to Syracuse last week 37-34 and have a decisive AWAY win over UAB 49-10. That speaks volumes in my book.
Bob Toledo coaches Tulane... the same Bob Toledo who applied for the Miner coaching job that eventually went to Mike Price. Steve Stanard is the NEW defensive coordinator for Tulane and he previously coached at New Mexico St.
Hmmmm.... Some interesting aspects to this game...
Last year at the Sun Bowl, Tulane beat Utep 34-24. The year before that, I watched Tulane beat Utep at the Superdome 45-38... These 2 games reinforced my belief that Utep plays at the level of their competition.
In summary, this game is going to be better than a pillowfight... and I predict it will go down to the team that wants it more.
So if Realm was putting his money on this game... I would pick Tulane to win 45-28.

Some will believe that Utep was on the cusp of winning this game...
Realm doesn't believe that... we couldn't hold a 14 point lead and we couldn't stop Houston from scoring at will.
Houston and Utep have been playing each other for 6-7 years already so we're no stranger to one another.
So why are we surprised that Houston continues to rack up big yardage(711) against our Coach Patterson's NEW-N-IMPROVED, Revamped, Goin-Get-Medeival, Fired-Up Defense?
Well MinerMan can tell you with facts and figures.

2 years ago, I went to the Superdome to watch Utep beat a pathetic Tulane team.
Didn't wind up that way though...
I couldn't believe Utep didn't have any desire to play that day and they got beat by Tulane team that simply wanted it more.
Utep was the better team... but there was NO DESIRE in this team.
That game told me that Price had to go before Utep could get better. Can't believe Price is still here.
Like I said before... I'll be watching this game to see if it is the Same-O'

This was a very, very entertaining game no matter which team you were rooting for.
Couple of breaks and it could have gone either way...
Still, in my opinion... Houston was the best team here.
AND once again, Utep didn't quit. But over 15 of Utep's players are from the Houston area so it mattered to them that they gave their all in this game.
It was very noticeable how empty the Sun Bowl was. In the interview after the game, Price asked Jon how many people were at the game and I noticed Jon didn't answer him.
Now I know why... Price was asking for more than 33K and he got quite a bit less.
I'll be watching the Miners when they play Tulane next to see if these are the typical Miners who play to the level of their competition.

USF scored 56 seconds into the game and I thought we were in for a long, long night. About what I expected playing the 18th Ranked team.
What I didn’t expect was for Utep to answer back with a nicely sustained drive of their own. I thought Carson Meger as a quarterback was a mistake BUT he showed a lot of composure and grit with his play.
USF quickly put up another score… and once again, Utep answered with another nice drive.
Utep’s receivers looked like they had glue on their hands… I was very, very impressed. WR Anthony McGhee and finally a BIG Tight End(6’5 KevinPerry) that can be depended on to catch a critical pass.
Even the defense stepped it up a notch and went toe-to-toe with USF’s highly touted offense.
But there were signs that Utep was never in USF’s league… the expected Utep gratuitous fake punt and multiple 4th down conversions. The kind of plays I call as a coach when I’m playing Madden NFL on my XBOX.
BUT MIKE… NOT IN REAL LIFE !!!
Utep had difficulty getting closer than 2 touchdowns and finally USF tired of the chase and shut down all of Utep’s gimmick plays and blew the game open 52 – 24.
So what did I think??
First, I am glad I wasn’t embarrassed with the game on TV. In fact, I was proud of the effort. We were gutsy and never quit.
And that’s when I realize I have to remember a truism about a Price coached team. Under Price, Utep shows a strong tendency to play UP / DOWN to the level of competition.
Why… Why… Why do I keep forgetting this??
It is one of the infuriating things about a Price coached team is they will play when they want to… NOT when they have to.
So what do I think of our chances with Houston on Thursday?? Since a lot of Utep’s players are from around there… I expect us to play at a level above our norm. I expect the game to be close. Past history shows this.
I also expect a possible win if the ball bounces right.
But if I had to put money on this game… I would put my money on Houston. They have too much going right.
And Houston… because it’s my money… be ready for another fake punt.

With the slaying of Coach Mike Locksley in Albuquerque.... I think there may be a movement to do the same here in El Paso.
But was it the 48-45 loss to Sam Houston State that pulled the trigger OR was it the underaged and drunk recruit(?) driving in Locksley's car that did the honors??
Hmmm....

Utep didn't embarass themselves on national TV. Gotta give it to Carson too. Played with a LOT of composure.
It got away from us in the end... but they were no more concerned about us than they would be playing their scout team.
They caught on to all the gimmick plays and shut everything down.
Still... we may have shot ourselves in the foot by going all out with South Florida... and having to take on Houston this Thursday.

Games starts at 4pm MST.
We've done a lot of talking on this board about keeping Lamaison out of this meaningless game... and play him when it counts.
But what about the other players on the team who stand to get beaten up or hurt??
When you're overmatched and know it... even though you're doing it for the money... it can't be good for your chances of continued success.

Was it REALLY the defense
OR
WAS IT JUST PATHETIC OFFENSE???
After all, Utep's touchdown was the result of a 60 yard gain on a Fake Punt with 7 yards to go on the Utep 29 yard line.
If we had missed... this would have been a 14 point turnaround.
