I just miss the rivalries that we had with the MWC...
Forged by History and Geographical links...
Real passion flowed in those games...

Well I read the offensive post... and I agree with mistabinks... NOT MUCH THERE THAT IS OFFENSIVE.
Maybe because I'm looking at it through "TROLL" eyes??
Well, it is good that Realm doesn't post there any longer... it is pretty obvious that the atmosphere there wouldn't have been good for my health.
What is surprising for me... is that on the same day they ban FireGaryNord... Tom Carrasco posts my Sarah Palin video.
Gotta love it...

Great win for the Miners. Everything seem to click. The usual suspects played great but I was really impressed with our bench. Where has this version of Claude been? Don't get me wrong... this was a GREAT win.... BUT....
They went from a tied half-time to the Miners just pulling away at half-time. The contrarian in me noticed the Miners were keeping Tulsa away from attacking the paint:
1) excessive hand-checking to prevent movement towards the basket. I never saw it being called by the officials.
2) getting Tulsa's 7' Jordan into foul trouble so that 6' 10" Idlet had to take over --- and he was too skinny and too gawky to establish any kind of presence on the offensive/defensive side.
When the officials let the boys play... it usually benefits the home team. That's what I saw here.
Will be interesting to see what type of return game we see in Tulsa... And what kind of officiating can we expect to see. Then what will happen when Tulsa hosts the Cusa tournament.

With the RPI in the 50's, if UTEP continues to win, it should be in the mid 40's by seasons end. A regular season CUSA championship, a 24-5 record and 45ish rpi should be enough to get us in (unless we choke and lose in the first round of the CUSA tourney). There is really no reason why UTEP should not be able to win the remaining games on there schedule. Yeahhh !! utepcips... how ya doing!! Nice to see you here!!
This place has a great feel to it already.

Here is to hoping the hot streak continues and we see another Miner victory tonight. Go Miners. Tonight will be the game that Realm has been pointing to since the beginning of the season.
Who are the players... and who are the pretenders... tonight will go a long way to answering that questions.
Tonight's game will be played at Utep... a traditionally tough place for any opposing team to play. If Tulsa's Jordan can keep out of foul trouble... then I expect them to dictate the pace of the game.
So far... Utep has dictated the pace to other teams...
Who will win will depend on who can dictate the pace... If Tulsa can force Utep into a slow-down pace... then Realm points to Tulsa as the winner...
If not, then I expect Utep's 6th man(a packed house of Miner fans) to provide the will to win..
C-ya after the game.
Nice to see ya MistaBinks... can you go into your profile and play with the width/height of your avatar so it is more easily seen. I think it is Hilarious but I have a hard time making it out.

Those are impressive RPIs... I'm sure Utep deserves them according to the way the rankings are tabulated. Certainly Utep is a different team since mid-season when Derrick Caracter has joined the team.
The guy has been playing MONSTER basketball and definitely gives opposing teams fits by trying to guard him.
Another thing, MinerMan... I want to admit I was wrong AGAIN when I said this team wouldn't get over 10K.
They got 10.5K last night against Houston and look like a sure sell-out against Tulsa this Saturday.
The entire year has seen fans stay away... but looks like they are coming around now.

Ever wondered what happened to former Miner basketball players? Dale Vanwright is currently at LeTourneau University in Longview, TX Franklin Jones didn't do much of anything at Mercyhurst or Mountain State Chano Rashiduddin is currently at Indian Hills CC Jason Jones is currently sitting out at Middle Tennessee Blaise Ffrench is currently sitting out at St. Peter's Maurice Thomas and Malik Alvin did not return for their Senior seasons at St. Bonaventure and Binghamton. Not sure if they ended up anywhere. I can still remember, when it was announced Franklin Jones had signed with Utep and gibbi wrote a post saying Utep found its next great center...
I was able to rub that in his face for years...
Ahhhh... Good times.
I still think Vanwright, Malik Alvin and Grease Thomas would have contributed heavily to the Miners had Barbie not run them off.
One has to wonder why the Coach gets so anal.

Utep played what looked like a typical Utep kind of game... as they shot 46% from the field & 67% from the line.
UAB, on the other hand, did not play their usual game. They shot 27% from the field.
And when you're shots ain't dropping... things fall apart.
Still, with all that went right for Utep... and all that went WRONG for UAB... Utep needed 2 overtimes to get the win.
Memphis and UAB were two away games I didn't expect the Miners to have a chance at... but they did what they needed to do.
In my book, they now have a paved road to the Cusa championship.
Congrats to the Miners...

UAB doesn't have the height OR the bulk to throw into the game like Utep does... but it has the discipline... and it has an effective defense.
UAB also does something else Utep doesn't do well... they pass the ball around to get the easy assist. They average between 8-10 assist a game with Aaron Johnson leading them in that category with 4.4 assists per game.
UAB also has 6'6 Guard - Elijah Millsap as their leading scorer. I predict UAB will throw screens to help get him matched up against the smaller Culpepper.
I'll be interested in seeing how Utep handles a taller guard. I know other teams will be watching this as well.
Free throws... and which team makes them will be a factor in this game. I see UAB collecting a lot of fouls from Utep because Utep hasn't learned to play defense with its feet... instead of relying 100% on their hands.
UAB isn't a great team... not by any stretch of the imagination... but they are scrappy and play to their strengths. The #25 rank tells you this team can be there one minute and forgotten the next.
Should be an interesting game... does Utep have a chance?? Most Definitely. But I see UAB's style and discipline as negating Utep's raw talent.

Hmmm... checked it out on wikipedia. The main ingredient, scopolamine, can be found right here in the U.S. in Jimsom weed(aka locoweed).
Medicinally, it is used, among other things, as a transdermal patch that you stick behind the ear to prevent seasickness (prescription only).

Very interesting film about the Colombian Devil's Breath tree also known as the Borrachero Tree or Drunken Binge Tree.
A very well done 16 minute film that explains the main ingredient from this tree, scopolamine, can render you totally open to suggestion without any resistance.
And without any memory after it is done.
A favorite drug of Colombian gangs because it is the perfect drug for taking advantage of people. You don't even have to ingest the drug orally to be under it's influence... you just have to be in proximity of it.
The victim looks, thinks and acts totally normal but they're not... they are under the power of suggestion from the person who gave it to them.
Watch the VBS video report.

Hi. I came by last week and yesterday and the day before that but there is never anyone here. But then I see new posts. Is there a certain time when everyone shows up to talk? I thought I would sign up and join in the conversation. Oh well. Later. mel Mel,
Yeah, this will be a problem for awhile until this board gets going with more posters. Until then, I'm enjoying the quiet but I'm also enjoying the challenge of getting this Utep Sports board going.
I work long hours and generally don't get to this board until 10-11pm CST. But I'll try to be here whenever there is a game of significance. I should be here tonight during the UAB game.
MinerMan's schedule is probably more different than mine.
See you then...

Hi. I'm sending you both this post and a pm(personal message) on this.
I agree it is hard to see...
From the main menu, you should see a dark blue bar at the very top of the screen... that displays the following options:
home___ help___ search ____ members____ calendar____ profile____ logout
Click on the "logout" button.
Thanks... Realm

According to one of my sources, Texas and UTEP will play each other in football in the near future. More details, when I have them You know... the more I think about this... the more I don't like the idea of this game.
Realm doesn't care if Utep gets a million dollars for playing this game in Austin.
This team would be better suited to playing Texas Tech, Texas A&M, BYU, Utah, etc...
Any game that had the pretence of being competitive would get my interest... not this...
Thanks Stull... for pimpin' the Miners out like this
What if Univ of Texas' athletic director DeLoss Dodds did the same thing??

Only 7700 in attendance last night. Tulane sucks so bad at both football and basketball, they don't bring anything to the table. Empty arenas, bad teams, no national name. What makes it even worse is that UTEP lost to them in football. Pathetic. How will the games being on TV affect our attendance. I say a shade above 8,000 for Houston and depending on how they play, aka if they win, the Tulsa game has a good shot at over 10,000. MinerMan,
Utep fans have been raised to follow players who give everything they have to the team... what Barbie has brought us is selfish basketball... street ball... "Meeee" basketball.
It won't play in Peoria... and it certainly won't play in El Paso.
El Pasoans will spend their hard earned money where they get something of value back...
This ain't it...
Only way they get +10K or more is if they drop ticket prices significantly... like they did last year to attract CBI attendance.
Utep fans, by and large, are too smart for that ol' trick...

Caracter is the true center. When they are out there together Moultrie will play more like a point guard. They both have knocked down 3s during a game. They probably knock them down like nothing in practice. They know they can hit these shots so they take their chances. Lets not forget they are trying to impress NBA scouts. Here's why I like it, when you have Moultrie and Caracter out on the floor at the same time, that a lot for any team to defend, it makes us better on defense, and definitely makes us better off the boards. From today's(1/27) game log...
SMU beat UCF 65 - 43 <-- shows UCF is not a very good team Memphis beats Marshall 75 - 72

I have to note that I am pleasantly surprised to see Utep with a handful of 3 star players who have committed to us. It is just a waiting game to see if they are STILL here when signing day comes... and if they make it onto the playing field... where it counts.
Baby steps... and yes I realize we've been taking baby steps for many, many years now.

I give you that having those 2 guys creates match-up problems for the other team. And on paper we look like we should win the battle of the boards.
But is it really happening??
I was not impressed with UCF. Their big guys were too skinny and were easily moved out of the way by the bulkier Moultrie and Caracter.
stahala, I think the true test of your statement will come starting with the UAB game and then the Tulsa and Houston games.
Should be great test of wills on the basketball court come Saturday.

I gave you that smite by accident. Sorry. That's OK stahala... I'm used to them.
I was wondering if I can ask you a question about your blog posting where you felt really excited about the new Utep line-up during the UCF game.
Does it seem to you that Moultrie blends into the background whenever Caracter in there at the same time. ALmost as if Moultrie is losing his idenity whenever Caracter is in the game.
Hence, the unexplained 3 point shots....

One of the arguments I had with the old board was they only wanted to discuss sports. Don't get me wrong, the focus should be about Sports... but there is so much more to the city of El Paso than sports.
Some things transcend sports.
Maybe MinerMan can create a section where we can discuss subjects not related to sports?? For example, I also have a desire to write a post about the financial situation that the U.S. currently finds itself in.
In January of 2010, Teo GarcĂa Simental, alias "El Teo", was captured in La Paz, Mexico.
Does the arrest of the head of the cartel, along with the death of his brother, signal the decline in murders in Juarez??
Juarez had 2,657 killings in 2009 making it one of the most dangerous cities in the world. How can El Pasoans find any comfort knowing that a city they once took for granted is now under seige.
All this despite the fact the Mexican Army now patrols the streets.
For me, at least, the killings in Juarez seemed to have gotten started in the past decade when over 400 women were killed... with no clear answer as to the identities of the killer(s).
What is it about Juarez, in particular, that brings out this kind of insanity??
Once again a warning that the following pics are very graphic...www.elpasotimes.com/ci_14163310

stahala, I posted on Joe's blog(as Realm) for the first time last week.
A friend of mine, Pepto Bismol, posted on Joe's blog. He hasn't posted on here yet but he will. He is creating a YouTube movie with a satirical Utep slant to it... using brand new software that is very quirky... and he says it will be very entertaining once he finishes it... and posts it here on the board.
I saw it... and it was entertaining but still very raw. About 20% done.
UCF just looked like it had players that weren't D1 caliber... and I think that is reflective in their record. Good fan support though.
Somebody already gave me a negative smite. I guess the crew from Digs or the Den has found us here...

Nice to see you Stahala... been reading your posts for awhile on Joe's blog.
Yep, I remember that game with Fresno up in Save Mart arean... I believe it snapped Utep's 10 or 11 game winning streak. I'm surprised that it was Sadler because I thought it was Gillispie at the helm. You sure about this??
Utep needs to win this Saturday against UAB... if they don't then they are 0-4 against top 25 ranked teams(Tx Tech, Mississippi and BYU).
UAB is the start of an interesting 3 game series with Houston & Tulsa that should go a long way in pinpointing where Utep fits in on the Cusa hierarchy.
