MinerMan... Dead right on the Sell OUT
Be it Basketball OR Football... SMU and Rice always play us tough and one of those teams gets a win out of us.
Do I think Rice will win?? Nawwwww....
But NOT a blow-out either.

Read this for the full article: news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100226/ap_on_sp_co_ne/bkc_it_s_almost_marchHere is the synopsis that will dispel wishful cheerleader thinking:
Any team who wins their respective conference tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. No matter the regular season record or RPI.
ELSE, these factors come into play...
1) The Selection Committee:
Chairman: Dan Guerrero, UCLA athletic director; Gene Smith, Ohio State athletic director; Laing Kennedy, Kent State athletic director; Stan Morrison, UC-Riverside athletic director; Jeff Hathaway, Connecticut athletic director; Lynn Hickey, Texas-San Antonio athletic director; Mike Bobinski, Xavier athletic director; Dab Beebe, Big 12 commissioner; Doug Fullerton, Big Sky commissioner; and Ron Wellman, Wake Forest athletic director.
2) RPI
The Ratings Percentage Index is used as a supplement by the committee to help determine the 34 at-large berths in the field. The RPI, according to Collegiate Basketball News, uses three component factors: winning percentage against Division I teams (25 percent), schedule strength (50 percent), and opponents' schedule strength (25 percent). Games against non-Division I teams are not used in calculating the RPI. Keep in mind Utep's current SOS is a very poor 125
3) The Big Dance Odds (since 1991) Keep in mind that Utep's current RPI is a very respectable 45
a) RPI 01 to 30 -- 99.3% of these teams will receive an at-large bid
b) RPI 31 to 40 -- 82.9% of these teams will receive an at-large bid
c) RPI 41 to 50 -- 55.1% of these teams will receive an at-large bid <-- YIKES... Dat's right !!
d) RPI 51 to 60 -- 25.7% of these teams will receive an at-large bid
e) RPI > 60 -- Only 10 teams have ever received an at-large bid
Now that you have it in black and white... does everyone still feel confident Utep will get a bid if they make it to the finals and not win ??

They belong regardless. I think the bracketology that I looked at took two from Conference USA. To be safe they should advance to the final to get in. An early stumble and they will be nervous on March 7. They belong in the tournament. The problem is about 12 to 14 entrants don't belong, but that is life.

Cusa is a ONE-BID conference...
But if they make it through...
They are good....real good... should draw a 6-10 seed and should advance. This team has lost only close games and won a bunch too. The fact that they are never blown out is because they play defense and they get the ball into the paint and score and get to the line. They can get to the sweet 16 but let's see if they can avoid playing a 1 or 2 in the second round. Not that they cannot beat a one or a two, but let's see the match up first.
So Realm will wait until the end of the season... then decide if he plucks down some Green.

At half, the Dukies having a lot of trouble with the Tulsa. Only a 4 point game. This would be good for our RPI as well as our conference. Hope Tulsa can pull it out. I hate Fucken Duke. OK... the midnight hour struck... and the carriage turned back into a pumpkin for Tulsa.

11 game win streak, the Miners deserve it. If they lose to Rice, they don't Need to win 2/3 and make the finals... I keep reading OVER AND OVER... that Cusa will be a ONE invite league...
With that in mind... I don't trust just making it into the finals.
There are too many other teams out there with quality wins that can make a case for going to the Dance... but didn't win their tourney. How do you select the Haves from the Have NOTS ??
Easy... you look for quality wins...
I doubt the Selection Committee will agree that quality wins come from Cusa

Does Utep deserve to get an NCAA nod??
IMHO, there are lots of reason to say "No"... fewer reasons to say "Yes".
We need for Utep to win the Cusa tourney... and take the decision making out of the judges hands...
But if not... then the bad loses will come back to haunt us.
On the positive: who would have thought New Mexico St would be our best OOC victory at 66... and Oklahoma would be 104 !!
On the negative: we lost to Texas Tech when they were a top 25 team... now they are mired near the cellar of the Big 12 with 11 loses.
We lost to Miss State also when they were a top 25 team... no longer, though, since they have 8 loses.
Nice post Doug...

I hate to say this but if I were the commissioner of CUSA I'd slap a one game suspension on Strong and Culpepper. You just absolutely cannot go into the stands. I mean if it were a celebratory thing I might be more understanding, but if it's to go defend your loud mouth girlfriend then I just can't condone that. Players need to stay on the court. The stands are for fans... I think there is precedence for this... kind of... sort of... Utep was playing San Jose State and Coach Phil Johnson of SJS was getting into it with some fans who were sitting in back of the visitor's bench.
Supposedly, the E.P. fans were making fun of Coach Johnson's need for Psychiatric counseling... to the point where the Coach threatened to go into the crowd.
The coach was benched for 4 games, as I remember, and forced to apologize.
Utep instituted a policy of placing a guard in back of the visitor's bench to stop that scenario from ever happening again.
It will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes out of this... but I agree with Doug... at no time should the players be allowed to mingle with the crowd...
That is just asking for trouble.

Several Miners went into the stands at the end of last night's game.
There are pics from last night's game on this. tinyurl.com/ykxg7anUTEP holds off USM in final seconds (fight averted) Posted 2/24/2010 10:20 PM CST by Patrick Magee on hattiesburgamerican.com No. 25 UTEP beat Southern Miss 59-56 tonight, holding off a late run by the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss rallied much like in Saturday's win over UCF, but they came up short tonight. The Golden Eagles out-scored the Miners 18-6 in the final 7:57. Derrick Caracter, who almost joined the Golden Eagles in the offseason, was tough in the post for UTEP. The Louisville transfer had 17 points and eight rebounds as USM had no real answer for him. USM had one last chance to tie the game, but UTEP denied an open shot to Angelo Johnson, who had to kick it to Josimar Ayarza. The shot, which was Ayarza's first 3-point attempt of the season, barely rimmed out as the Eagles failed to get an important win. USM now prepares to travel to Memphis on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game. Houston beat Memphis tonight 92-75. A fight almost broke out in the stands at Reed Green Coliseum tonight when UTEP and USM fans began to argue at the conclusion of the game. UTEP players went into the stands to check out the dispute, which never came to blows. UTEP players pictured in orange jerseys are No. 3 Randy Culpepper, top left, and No. 11 Myron Strong, bottom Realm...

Strelz, they are talking about minerdigs.net. It's a UTEP fan site on the Rivals network. It's a poorly run site that has moderators that will ban you if you consistently rail against the athletic department. I've not been banned there but most of the posters on this board have because they have been critical of the athletic department. They have a couple of writers there but they charge a fee for you to be able to access "premium" content. The problem is that 75% of the people who go to that site do not subscribe because the updates are slow and usually you will be reading something a week old. I was hesitant to answer because my viewpoint is somewhat slanted... but I always wondered how you can have a sports board and demand 100% agreement.
Doesn't make sense...

Da House!!!!!!!!!! [glow=red,2,300]Just thought i'd chime in, as the newest member of the board, looking forward to chatting up all thing Miners... Good or bad, bring it, not here to start trouble... I am interested in looking at a different perception of Miner sports. [/glow] we're all here to share all things Miners... And after that, have some fun.
Welcome Shy...
As for a different perspective --I don't think I can give you one... Miners are winning... and winning in a dominant fashion. When Caracter first joined the team at mid-season, there was some question whether he disrupted the team chemistry or not.
But now the team is rolling... and I'm waiting for a team that can match up against them so I can gauge how good they are.
No question they are dominating... BUT because they lost 3 OOC games that might have gotten them "noticed"... the Miners will need to win BIG to get into the NCAA.
It would be tragic to see them left out of the NCAA... but that could very well happen unless they run the table(or come very, very close to it).

Realm and I had a little discussion in another thread about the officiating in the first UTEP-Tulsa game. This was the flip side of the UTEP-Tulsa game in El Paso as Tulsa got a lot of favorable calls today. Unlike Tulsa in El Paso, UTEP didn't fold in Tulsa. The second half wasn't pretty but they kept the lead and got the win. There is no reason to breakdown when the calls don't go your way. Mr. Mista,
I just woke up and was expecting to catch the game in another hour... ONLY to find out it already finished !!
I expected the officiating to get one sided... but PROPS to Utep. They played through it.
Realm can't argue with Mr. Mista... you were right... Realm was DEAD WRONG.
I really hate that !!

I'm looking forward to this game on Saturday.
Tulsa's looking for some "officiating" payback... and also any chance Tulsa can use to muddy up Utep's chances of getting an NCAA automatic bid because they won the regular season --will be accomplished by winning this game.
This will also give Tulsa some momentum and confidence going into the Cusa tournament.
Shoud be INTENSE...
My prediction... if the game is low-scoring then Tulsa takes it... otherwise it is Utep's to win...
Tulsa 60 - Utep 55

I think players like Manny Cass and Marcus Ruppel were just big assholes and thought they were better than they actually are or going to be. Look at Isaac Gordon and Gabe McCulley. I don't think they've shown signs of being great. Why players like Manny and Marcus are recruited in the first place is beyond me. Good to be back home and finally able to write in green again...
I haven't seen Isaac Gordon play yet so I can't comment on him... but I think Gabe McCulley has contributed nicely....
Marcus Ruppel, I haven't seen either BUT a lot of people seemed to suggest he showed signs of greatness in the short time he was here.

I have NEVER questioned Barbie's ability to recruit... That has been established.
But we have a coach that appears to have a penchant for running off players. I say appears because that is my impression I get with players who don't "blossom" VERY quickly.
Whatever happened to a school or coach honoring a recruitment pledge??
Are players truly disposable under the Barbie regime AND is this disposability the real reason for Barbie's success??

First, my neurons are not firing on DDM offense... Maybe one of the other guys can chime in.
I'm thinking this is where you attack the basket then throw it back out for a 3 point attempt??
If this correct then I see this as a version of the Laker's 3 point offense they run around Kobe Bryant.
Some posters feel Barbee's strong point is his ability to recruit players who fit his basketball style. The 3 years prior have been frustrating to watch and there were concerns over his coaching ability.
The reason Memphis passed over naming him coach... Despite having Cal's solid endorsement.
I, personally, found it impossible to watch his coaching and wouldn't watch any Miner games. But all that changed this year... And I'm riding this horse because it has legs.
So which is it?? Coaching OR Players??
I think a lot of us will watch to see how it unfolds.

Say is very true... Utep does use having a very DEEP bench to it's advantage.
I also realize the home team, almost always, benefits from the officiating that is "supposed" to be impartial.
What I'm saying is we've created a WW III situation with Tulsa come Cusa playoff time. It is going to be war according to the Tulsa coach.
Not getting his vote was a prelude to expect no quarter.
Should be interesting to see how the playoff brackets are broken down.
"pussy douche"? ... I had to smile at that one when I read it.

Sportsmanship... Or the lack of it.
Tulsa's Coach Wojcik is willing to conceed Utep played one hell of a 2nd half.
But the win is tainted by Barbie playing up the crowd and influencing the officials so that Tulsa was unable to use the gameplan that was succesful at getting a tie score in the 1st half.
In my book, the officials called a different 2nd half and that played into the host team's favor.
It is bad enough to lose... But to have the officials take it away from you.
That's an insult that can't go unanswered...
You could see Wojcik seething on the bench... and there wasn't one damn thing he could do about it.
Well, almost nothing...

Realm would have to agree with both your points... SMU has been playing well of late(having beaten Memphis by 10 points)

They'll make it a close game but in the end it will be Utep.
