The win against Memphis was big...
But if we lose in Orlando against UCF... then the win against Memphis is negated...
That's the problem with fightin' to get to the top... it's the coming back down that's the problem...

Utep took off in the 2nd half and never looked back.
Compound that with UCF's cold shooting...
Was Utep good... or was UCF just that bad??
I can't really say this game told me anything...

I thought the Miners played really well. If they play like this, they could win the CUSA regular season crown, too bad they would still need to win the tournament to get into the NCAAs.

I think the UCF game says a lot. UCF is not that bad. They have Micheal Jordan's son for god sakes! But seriously, they did beat the same Houston team that beat us, and it was on the road. I think the lopsided win has to do with Barbee finally putting out the best starting line up possible. Also nine 3-pointers and 39 points from Culpepper help. This is a new group of guys who did not play together last year, and I think now that's its midpoint through the season they are clicking on all cylinders. As for making the NCAA tournament, I see CUSA as two bid conference. Whoever wins the regular season and, of course, whoever wins the tournament. I doubt the same team will do both. Marshall, UAB, Memphis, Tulsa, and UTEP all have good records and were all in reach of a top 25 ranking. Even Houston and S. Miss got votes early on. I think that's enough to grant the regular season champions an at-large bid. P.S. Do you guys post on the El Paso Times blog? If so, what IDs are yours? I hope this site catches on. Good Luck

stahala, I posted on Joe's blog(as Realm) for the first time last week.
A friend of mine, Pepto Bismol, posted on Joe's blog. He hasn't posted on here yet but he will. He is creating a YouTube movie with a satirical Utep slant to it... using brand new software that is very quirky... and he says it will be very entertaining once he finishes it... and posts it here on the board.
I saw it... and it was entertaining but still very raw. About 20% done.
UCF just looked like it had players that weren't D1 caliber... and I think that is reflective in their record. Good fan support though.
Somebody already gave me a negative smite. I guess the crew from Digs or the Den has found us here...

I gave you that smite by accident. Sorry. That's OK stahala... I'm used to them.
I was wondering if I can ask you a question about your blog posting where you felt really excited about the new Utep line-up during the UCF game.
Does it seem to you that Moultrie blends into the background whenever Caracter in there at the same time. ALmost as if Moultrie is losing his idenity whenever Caracter is in the game.
Hence, the unexplained 3 point shots....

Caracter is the true center. When they are out there together Moultrie will play more like a point guard. They both have knocked down 3s during a game. They probably knock them down like nothing in practice. They know they can hit these shots so they take their chances. Lets not forget they are trying to impress NBA scouts. Here's why I like it, when you have Moultrie and Caracter out on the floor at the same time, that a lot for any team to defend, it makes us better on defense, and definitely makes us better off the boards.

I give you that having those 2 guys creates match-up problems for the other team. And on paper we look like we should win the battle of the boards.
But is it really happening??
I was not impressed with UCF. Their big guys were too skinny and were easily moved out of the way by the bulkier Moultrie and Caracter.
stahala, I think the true test of your statement will come starting with the UAB game and then the Tulsa and Houston games.
Should be great test of wills on the basketball court come Saturday.

SMU beat UCF 65 - 43 <-- shows UCF is not a very good team Memphis beats Marshall 75 - 72
