Realm doesn't like this one bit...
I could understand it working this way in football where we only play 12 games a year.
But now basketball too ?!?!
Something stinks on Biel St.
MinerMan... you scooped the news from the other boards... nice job.

11 Conference USA 44.70 39.26 12 West Coast 44.15 40.15 13 Horizon League 43.61 39.35 14 Colonial Athletic 42.79 38.12 Disagree with your statement about the Horizon League. As you can see, CUSA is barely ahead of the Horizon. Butler beat Northwestern, Ohio St, and Xavier, all better than any non conference win UTEP has. Butler is a bad match up for UTEP, they play smart and can shoot. I will have to agree with MinerMan on this one... I am planning for the worst and hoping for the best.
In reading the stuff on Butler's board, I was impressed (and surprised) at the knowledge Butler fans have of Utep... are we on their radar??
I was wondering if they are giving us too much respect because, as strelz pointed out, we beat UAB twice... and that is the team that handed Butler their worst loss of the year.
Is Utep riding the coattails of UAB into the NCAA game?? I think that can benefit us.
Also, I saw something in the way Houston attacked our offense. It looked like they bypassed using the expected man-to-man defense in favor of a modified zone. Also, instead of going BIG to negate our height... they went with 3 to 4 quicker guards and gambled a lot.
We were definitely bothered and out of synch by what Houston was doing on defense. On offense, using 3 or 4 guards gave Houston more offensive weapons to use in attacking Utep's defense... Coleman had a horrible shooting game, and yet, Houston was never out of it.
I'm sure Butler saw all this too AND we can expect to see a replay.
I know I aggravated my Irritable Bowel Syndrome just watching the last 4 minutes of the Utep-Houston game.

UAB beat Butler this season 67-57 don't think they can match up with caracter and culpeper their leading scorer is 6'9'' gordon haywood who is a G-F Absolutely correct strelz. The game was played in Birmingham AND Butler had its worst shooting game of the season in that particular game.
Butler had played a scorching one point win over Xavier on Saturday before traveling and playing UAB on the following Tuesday. This is how Butler's coach explained their cold shooting.

Up in San Jose.
Butler(28-4 and a perfect 18-0 in the Horizon League) seeded 5th and Utep is seeded 12th.
We went from a possible 5th seed to a 12th seed wih the loss to Houston. The Selection Committee obviously didn't think much of Utep losing to a lower RPI rated Houston.
Eddie Perls says: Along with UTEP, Minnesota and Florida were considered among the bubble teams most at-risk for NOT making the tournament.
Butler is no softie... they beat UCLA / Ohio St. in their OOC schedule.
Winner of this game plays winner of Vanderbilt (24-8 and 12-4 in the tough Southeastern Conf) and Murray St(30-4 and 17-1).
strelz got his wish, though, with the game being in San Jose...

We have "History" with those guys. Lot of water under the bridge.
You can still see the fan interest when we play them in either basketball OR football.
You have the Cusa-Lite apologist who will mention EXPOSURE / MONEY is the big reason for the move... BUT there is just no denying that we don't have the rivalries that we used to have....

An amazing night of upsets. But, the upsets need to stop right now! Memphis and UAB were the only real competition left in the league, except Houston. I guess we'll be seeing Houston in the final. I agree with uncle doug... the upsets need to stop already or the experts will start to question the quality of teams in Cusa.

Utep plays Tulsa today at 2pm MST.
Good luck to Utep
So strange that 3 of the 4 top eschelon teams have gone down after a first round bye. I imagine quite a lot of bets went south after last night.
That begs the question... does this speak of parity in the league... OR mediocrity??
Just wondering out loud.

You get the feeling Utep got the invite based on its success this year.
Another reason I hope we can keep things together for next year. Would be nice to make waves on the National Scene.
Good exposure for Utep, for sure.
It mentions Utep "hosting regional games"... so I take this as games that will be held at the Don. If so, then the fans will possibly get a chance to see teams not on next year's schedule.
Realm... Does their recent success help? Sure. You have to remember that the Legends Classic is run by the Gazelle Group. Accepting bids to their CBI tournament the last 2 seasons probably played a bigger part in UTEPs inclusion. Props to MinerMan for seeing the fine print at the End of the Article.
Indeed, that may be a possible reason for our invite...

MinerMan, I would have to agree... never did I think these 2 would receive their respective honors.
In fact, both were prime reasons I wouldn't watch Miner Basketball. Randy with his jacking up 3 point shots with abandon... AND Barbee with what looked like a lack of Coaching abilities.
Congrats to both...
It begs the question... was Realm wrong... OR did Randy and Barbee have a growth spurt ??
This has been a very bizarre basketball season... full of very pleasant surprises.

This is first year that I have had to get excited about Barbee's version of Miner Ball.
I've admitted that I felt so frustrated watching Barbee's teams play that I haven't watched a basketball game until this year.
Now... NOW that we're getting ready to play in the tournament and go into the NCAA... this comes out.
Will Coach Barbee leave?? (Certainly his comment to Darren Hunt could have been a more emphatic "No !"... but it wasn't so I'm thinking Coach Barbee is "For Sale" to the highest bidder)
Will Caracter leave??
With uncertainty of Coach Barbee staying... will new recruits honor their pledge to play for Utep or will they start to look elsewhere ??
This just makes it difficult for the team to focus on the game when they have these kinds of distractions....
If the truth be known... Realm feels a little pissed.

According to ESPN's Doug Gottlieb Link: espn.go.com/blog/chicago/colleges/post/_/id/190/gottlieb-uteps-barbee-likely-depaul-coachUTEP coach Tony Barbee is a strong candidate to be DePaul's next head coach, according to ESPN college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb.
Gottlieb said Monday he believes Kentucky assistant coach Rod Strickland, a former DePaul player, would be a candidate to join Barbee's DePaul staff.
"I know [DePaul] reached out to Frank Martin before he re-signed with Kansas State," Gottlieb said Monday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "I think what they do is go down and get UTEP's coach. He played at UMass, was an assistant at Memphis and has done a terrific job at UTEP.
"That's what everyone is saying -- that Rod Strickland comes in, who used to be an assistant at Memphis and now is at Kentucky, is a legend at DePaul -- that's what everyone is saying ends up happening at DePaul."
Barbee, 38, took over at UTEP in 2006. The Miners have improved in each of his four seasons. This season he has guided them to a 24-5 overall record and a Conference USA regular-season title with a 15-1 mark. UTEP is ranked No. 21 and is an eighth seed in ESPN’s Bracketology.
Barbee, an Indianapolis native, was previously an assistant under John Calipari at Memphis and Massachusetts. Barbee also spent time at Wyoming as an assistant.
Gottlieb believes it will take time for any coach to return the Blue Demons to their former basketball glory.
"I think you have to find a way to be patient, build it," Gottlieb said. "There are some inherent problems at DePaul. [Northwestern's] Welsh-Ryan [Arena] is closer to their campus than [Allstate Arena] is to their campus. They have no atmosphere, no kind of student support. I don't know how you plan to compete on a year-by-year basis if you're in the Big East."
DePaul fired coach Jerry Wainwright midway through his fifth season on Jan. 11, and assistant Tracy Webster was named the interim coach. DePaul has gone 1-14 under Webster. It opens up the Big East Tournament against South Florida on Tuesday.

Part 2 is 8:31 long and Coach Barbee is asked about rumors of Coaching offers and he replies "I'm not going to get into any rumors, I'm focused on this team and this run"
Part 3 is 9:05 long and Coach Barbee hints that Caracter may not be around next year. He admits that players need to do what is ultimately best for them.

Realm is truly envious of you and uncle doug being present at the Don last night.
Realm... Actually, this was well after CTB addressed the crowd and after the trophy was presented to the Miners. That is how hyped up the crowd was. The game had been over for quite some time when the crowd rushed the floor. That's pretty incredible... I kept hearing Teicher warning Yellen about going out into that crowd.
Teicher also said he had NEVER seen a crowd like the one he saw after the game in the Don.

Just a quick word of explanation... it is not the "Official" RPI that gets published every Monday... it is an unofficial "Real Time" RPI list. It will be interesting to see how close it mirrors the "Official" RPI.
Interesting that we beat UAB twice... and UAB sits at 40.
I'm puzzled because before this game started... UAB's RPI was 41, while Utep was 44.

Mack McCarthy has resigned from East Carolina.
The third-year coach announced his decision after Saturday night's loss to Southern Miss.
McCarthy replaced Ricky Stokes before the 2007-08 season. He never finished better than ninth in Conference USA. The Pirates are 10-20 overall, 4-12 in C-USA heading into the C-USA tournament. That event begins Wednesday in Tulsa.

Realm, all that really matters is if you win or lose. Sometimes you win ugly. An ugly win is still a win. Enjoy! BUT come tournament time... we won't have forgiving refs to help us win the game.
Come NCAA time, we can't depend on the other team missing layups or shooting only .533 from the free throw line(8-15).
This team needs to be shakened up because my biggest fear is that we'll be another NCAA ONE-AND-OUT.
And if that happens... can we really enjoy "this" win.
I watched Coach Davis constantly hounding the officials to the point where I thought he was going to burst a blood vessel. That "hounding" made me look at the job being done by the officials. It wasn't good.

From the E.P. Times article: www.elpasotimes.com/minersmania/ci_14523653I know this isn't new... but I couldn't get excited until I saw the artist's rendition.
My thinking was that the old O2 Lounge was really tiny and would not be that Grand. Now I'm excited. It even looks like even the roof top will be available for outdoor dining/drinking. --SWEET !!
And this is supposed to be ready in 6 months?? "Brent Haskins, one of the coach's sons, said the restaurant and bar will be near the university and will be "done in good taste." Armstrong said the architecture of the building will be in Bhutanese design to fit with the architecture of the area and the university. "I really feel that having that type of architecture speaks volumes as to who we are as El Paso. Mrs. Haskins is very, very fond of that kind of architecture, and that's the major reason we're going in that type of direction," Armstrong said." Realm...
