Here is what I would like to see UTEP do with their 2010-11 basketball schedule. I will provide explanation for the match ups. Best of all, I think this schedule is very realistic. The schedule is an automatic upgrade because Texas Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff are not on it!
Likely or confirmed games:
at NMSU - confirmed NMSU - confirmed at BYU - pretty sure we return the game next season Texas Tech - hopefully the series will continue next season, if it does it will be in El Paso. UNM - It would be great to resume the series, if we have to go to ABQ to do it, so be it.
How and who we should schedule:
Seattle U - This should be the home opener. Why? Next season will be the 45th anniversary of the 66 National Title team and Seattle beat us that year. We open up with a team that is not very good and it a great backstory.
Grambling - You need to have some "softies" on your schedule, why not play the most recognized HBCU. Miner fans are tired of seeing TSU and UAPB. Bring in a different SWAC team and only one of them!!!
Northern Arizona - Without the multiple SWAC teams, we need other low majors to fill the schedule. NAU plays in the Big Sky and even if they are horrible, their RPI will not be as bad as another SWAC team. Again, a different opponent for UTEP fans to see.
San Jose St - SJSU doesn't draw well for their home games, it should be easy to get them to play here. SJSU will not have bad computer numbers and again, this game has some history/backstory to it. Why doesn't UTEP bring in teams like this on a regular basis?
Sun Bowl Classic - UTEP, UNC-Greensboro, St. Louis, Texas-San Antonio If they bring back this fading tournament, they should try to schedule SLU. Only because of Rick Majerus. El Paso likes the guy and I think if the Sun Bowl committee actually asked him, they might have a shot. UTEP opens up with UNCG and SLU opens with UTSA. No matter what happens in the first round, UTEP will play a decent team. UTSA is a pretty good team this year. Sign home and homes with SLU and UTSA if they tournament doesn't happen anyway! Playing at UTSA would not be a bad thing for UTEP since a lot of UTEP alumni/fans live in the SA area!
Finish off the non-con schedule with a pair of winnable road games somewhere, I suggest the state of Michigan.
at Detroit - Guess what? Backstory. Don Haskins accepted the job at Detroit for like a second. They play in the Horizon League and will not have bad computer numbers.
at Oakland - This team has historically decent computer numbers and they do not play in a bottom feeder league. If UTEP wins these two games, they would have helped their numbers and maybe ESPNU could pick up one of the games.
UTEP played 13 non-conference games this season and I "scheduled" 13 games too. UTEP might play more road games than normal, but that's a good thing. You create demand to see UTEP and attendance will be higher for your "cupcake" games. I feel this could be realistic and don't see why something similar can't happen.

UMass is also using the DDM offense with some questionable results. Personally, I think it will take Kellogg a few years to get his type of players into the system and teach a core group of players how to run the offense effectively. When it isn't working, it's very ugly. When it does work, we get some real good posessions out of it. We're very inconsistent, prone to turnovers, and as you said, we frequently wind up with poor shot selection. But we are young - starting 3 freshmen and a sophomore. Do you think the main reason that you are getting better each year has been at least partially due to the players finally getting the hang of the offense? Can we look forward to the offense stabilizing and becoming an asset in year 4 when our first good freshman class becomes juniors? Thanks! The one thing that no Miner fan can deny is that Coach Barbee had improved his win total every season. Not only do the players probably get the hang of the offense better, but they are also his players. Our team is filled with mostly Juniors and most of them have showed promised at one point or another. When Barbee first got here, we lost to teams we never should. Jackson St, Chicago St, East Carolina and occasionally, we have lost to bad teams. You will probably experience this too. I think once Kellogg gets his own players and establishes himself, UMass should be an NCAA tournament level team.

I'm a huge UMass fan and always root for alumni like coach Barbee. Congrats on such a great season. UMass fans are paying attention to what is happening at UTEP because of the ties with Barbee and the fact that we also have a coach who learned his trade under coach Cal. Cal's assistant do not generally have a stellar track record but hopefully Barbee and Kellog will change that. My question for you guys is: Is UTEP using the DDM offense or some variation of it? And if so, do you think that the system is helping with your success and recruiting? I realize that defense and rebounding are always critical to success, but my interest is in your views of the offensive system you use. Thanks! Realm, DDM = dribble drive motion offense. Yes they are using this offense. I personally dislike the offense just because there are times when a shot gets chucked up with 30 seconds remaining on the shot clock. I think it helps with recruiting because it is more of a fast-paced, exciting offense.

FireGaryNord, a long time poster at that bs website has been banned. Here is his last post:
Originally posted by utep2step: The team should wear this proudly. Coaches and voters knew what kind of UTEP team Barbee assembled and one that can play with ANY....yes, any team...including the top five.
Now UTEP has hit their stride and the opposing (and former) coaches want to keep us out. They just want two from CUSA..tops! Now that UTEP leads the conference, three is looking like a strong possibility meaning someone from a bigger conference on the bubble with a so-so RPI will get snubbed.
It's all about the money, nothing more, nothing less.
"Cornell is a legit Top 25 team. They played very well in road games at Syracuse and Kansas, beat St Johns and Alabama, have won 16 of their last 17, and didn't lose to Houston and NMSU. They also made the NCAA tournament the last 2 seasons. That's how the heck Cornell is #22."
So he gets banned for telling a poster facts that was complaining about Cornell being ranked #22. Unbelievable! That kind of crap will not go on here people!
