Best thing he ever did was leaving Iowa for UNM.

Glad UTEP hired Floyd, now all we need to do is get rid of Mike Price.

This is complete crap! With names out there like Floyd and Gillispie, Dickey is what were are left with. I thought Seton Hall's choice was bad, but this takes the cake. I hope Bob Stull's days are numbered if this is true. I agree. Randall Dickey would be best suited for a Southland or Summit League school, not UTEP. How is Randall Dickey supposed to put butts in the seats. Here is UTEP's one chance for the city and its fans to get really excited about it and they come up with this. Pathetic. Hope its an early April Fools Joke.

I hope this isn't true. Who cares if he is supposedly what the returning players want. They're only going to be here for one more season. Who cares? UTEP needs to think about its long-term future. Fuck Bob Stull if this is true.

That would be great. Hopefully Tim Floyd wouldn't leave us for a better job, when/if he wins here.

Basically in it, he said that the community did not support Barbee and he only got big crowds for the CBI and when they were winning.
Uh, when doesn't that happen in El Paso? How many people showed up for Billy's first season? What about Doc's last season? What about most of the non-conference games every fucking year? What about Haskins last seasons? It's all the same! El Paso only supports winners. There might be a good attendance bump next year if we hire TF or BG, but when they have a .500 season, the same 6,000 or 7,000 people will be there.
UTEP is lucky it gets the attendance it does, but the coach has nothing to do with the attendance, its all about the opposing team and UTEP's record. CUSA has ZERO rivalries and having a mediocre record will always keep the bandwagoners from attending games!

Update: the boosters are split on Billy G, with those against really stirring things up. Anything less than Floyd or Gillispie = FAIL.

New Auburn head coach Tony Barbee will serve as an in-studio analyst for the CBS College Sports Network's coverage of the 2010 NCAA Div. I Men's Basketball Championship this Friday through Sunday.
Should be interesting.

UTEP will have a lot of scholarships to give next season and now our next coach will have a whole year to find players to fill all those scholarships. Plus, Caracter is gone, with Culpepper and Moultrie possibilities as well. If we don't get Billy G, I just hope Houston doesn't. Tim Floyd would be a good hire, but the people that want Nolan Richardson are morons. He's been out of the game for years and is old news, like UTEP's 1966 National Championship.
Get an established head coach or upcoming assistant, not some old re-tread.

Good to hear. Bringing back BG would be great. He would be more likely to stay longer, especially if the boosters shell out the big bucks for him.

because billy can recruit and coach at the same time. Strelz pretty much hit the hail on the head. Billy would turn Houston into a big-time player. I hope they don't hire him, but they probably will.

everybody still in shock? I am still sick about the loss to butler. I think that describes my state exactly.
If I were a drinking man... it would take me about 2 weeks to fully recover.
Realm... Not me. I expect UTEP to choke whenever a big game comes around. Doesn't matter the sport, Football or Basketball. No Bowl wins since 1967 and no NCAA wins since 1992. UTEP won't win any big games until they start scheduling smarter and playing more games on the road. Their creampuff schedules don't help them when they play the big boys.

According to various sources, Penders is out. Question is, will Gillispie be in? If BG takes the reigns at Houston, UTEP basketball will suffer.

SI has a story on TB in this weeks magazine...they tout his coachin g ability. calapari calls him one of the best young coaches in the game today. the article says if he wins a few in the dance he moves on (guess he stays). in the article TB says he wouldn't want to play us...wonder how he feels today? Any team that plays real basketball and has talented players will beat this current UTEP squad. BYU beat us at home without their best player, Northern Iowa would smoke us, Ohio St, Xavier, Pittsburgh would all murder us. Playing the type of offense Barbee has will help us blowout crappy teams and give us a shot the majority of the time, but when a team plays fundamentally sound basketball, its an automatic UTEP loss.

I bet Ramon Martinez and Cliff Tucker are regretting their decisions to play for UNM and Maryland. Wonder why they didn't sign with UTEP? Probably because they liked winning too much.

SInce winning the National Title, UTEP is 7 - 14 and one of those wins was a "Regional 3rd place game". 9 "one and done"s, including the last 3. UTEP needs to start winning some games, duh right? We are no better than many one-bid leagues, they get lucky more than UTEP. Murray St, Northwestern St, Hampton, Siena, etc, can win games, why can't UTEP?

11 Conference USA 44.70 39.26 12 West Coast 44.15 40.15 13 Horizon League 43.61 39.35 14 Colonial Athletic 42.79 38.12 Disagree with your statement about the Horizon League. As you can see, CUSA is barely ahead of the Horizon. Butler beat Northwestern, Ohio St, and Xavier, all better than any non conference win UTEP has. Butler is a bad match up for UTEP, they play smart and can shoot. I'm no expert, but why is it that CUSA has 7 teams in post season play and Horizon League has only 2? Besides the obvious fact that CUSA has more members. And, Horizon has no one in the NIT. It's Green Bay in the CBI. I know what the stats say but think there are factors not reflected in them. Their champ mopped the floor with our champ. Butler and Horizon League are no joke. UTEP lost to Butler by more points than Lehigh did to Kansas! Pathetic!

Were we outplayed??
Were we over-hyped??
Did we look at the team with Orange Colored glasses??
Was Barbee leaving a distraction to the team's focus??
We can debate this on and on...
Realm doesn't need to... I got my mind right, boss. I expect nothing less from a school that hasn't won a bowl game since 1967 and an NCAA Tournament game since 1992. UTEP Athletics is pathetic, just like its AD. UTEP continues to schedule crap teams to beat up on and give a false sense of hope to the stupid El Pasoans that come around when they're winning. See ya, Caracter and Barbee. Good luck with your futures.

The NMSU has a good chance to sell out or at least get near capacity, but only if UTEP beats Houston. The UAPB game is a complete joke. It will be a boring, blowout game. I won't be wasting my Saturday night watching that bore-fest, can't imagine anybody besides the "cheerleaders" will either.
