When was the last time UCLA, Connecticut, Arizona, Indiana, and North Carolina, were all out of the tournament in the same season ?
1966! UTEP National Champions!

Only the local markets will be carrying the UTEP vs Butler game on CBS. UTEP vs Butler will be on CBS College Sports LIVE. Same goes for the Texas A&M vs Utah St game on Friday.

Butler played a decent preseason but their conference is full of puppies. Here is my theory. When Butler entered conference play they entered the "Twilight Zone." A place where Don Haskins used to go to pad his win stats and examine his team's strengths and weaknesses. A place that was visited by CTB this preseason. This is a backwards scenario. You are supposed to do the easy schedule first and go on to the tough stuff in conference play. Horizon has a conference RPI of 14 and C-USA is an 11 (lower numbers are better). It is very hard for me to believe that the Horizon League and C-USA are that close. There are flaws in the RPI math when it comes to a team's (or league's) improvement over time. Horizon has no match for Memphis, UAB, Tulsa. Do they have a coach with a pedigree like Tom Penders? Butler has cruised through the Horizon League with occasional challenges by weak teams. What happens when they are down by 10 and under intense pressure? Advantage....MINERS! 11 Conference USA 44.70 39.26 12 West Coast 44.15 40.15 13 Horizon League 43.61 39.35 14 Colonial Athletic 42.79 38.12 Disagree with your statement about the Horizon League. As you can see, CUSA is barely ahead of the Horizon. Butler beat Northwestern, Ohio St, and Xavier, all better than any non conference win UTEP has. Butler is a bad match up for UTEP, they play smart and can shoot.

At least when UTEP puts them on the schedule next year, they can say they're an NCAA Tournament team!

Are you going to have any time dedicated to UTEP/NCAA tourney talk on your show tomorrow or this week?

More from Seth:
"On my board, UTEP eats up at-large bid that would have gone to Ole Miss. Now my last three in are Va Tech, Fla and Minnesota."

From his twitter:
"SethDavisHoops Greg Anthony and I will give you our power conference bids at halftime of Ohio St-Illinois. We're trying to figure out if UTEP is still in."
Hard to imagine UTEP not getting in, but wouldn't be totally surprised. If that happens to be the case, I won't watch a single second of the NCAA tournament. Seriously.

Of course they blow it. Out coached, couldn't hit a shot when it mattered. Typical.

Playing on broadcast tv doesn't happen very often for schools like UTEP, hopefully they will destroy a Houston team playing their 4th game in 4 days. Go Miners!

I think it's an inevitability that UTEP will join the MWC. Conference realignment is just around the corner. Speculation is that Utah and Colorado will go to the PAC-10. That leaves 8 MWC teams. The new "in" thing is to have at least 12 teams in a league so that there can be a football championship game. I say UTEP, Fresno St, Boise St, and Utah St join MWC. I could see Utah St being replaced by Houston, SMU, or Tulsa. Would make more sense to have a travel partner for TCU.

the miners are going great...10 deep...one scribe has them as an 8th. seed today...love all of this but guess what I miss? the old foes: BYU, Utah, UNM, Wyoming, CSU, Air Force, etc. I agree 100%. Being in CUSA is a joke. Boob Stull caved in to some donors and decided to align UTEP with southwestern teams with no fans. Houston, SMU, Rice, and Tulsa are lucky to draw 3,000 for basketball and 20,000 for football. UTEP should have remained in the WAC and hope for an MWC invite. Our course moving to CUSA was supposed to help the football team in recruiting, but as we can see, it hasn't helped one fucking bit.

CUSA has yet to prove it deserves multiple bids. UAB played poorly down the stretch and Memphis lost to SMU and Houston twice! UTEP needs to win the tournament so they can get some respect.

Memphis down 36-27. Even though its only the first half, I'm glad UTEP avoided playing Houston in this round.

You get the feeling Utep got the invite based on its success this year.
Another reason I hope we can keep things together for next year. Would be nice to make waves on the National Scene.
Good exposure for Utep, for sure.
It mentions Utep "hosting regional games"... so I take this as games that will be held at the Don. If so, then the fans will possibly get a chance to see teams not on next year's schedule.
Realm... Does their recent success help? Sure. You have to remember that the Legends Classic is run by the Gazelle Group. Accepting bids to their CBI tournament the last 2 seasons probably played a bigger part in UTEPs inclusion.

UTEP asking students to approve a new activity fee to help with athletic department recruiting and coaching salaries...right on time as they enter conf.USA tournament. www.elpasotimes.com sports section...also on the front page Well deserved, imo. Mike Price hasn't had his contract extended recently! I would give money to a "Get CMP the fuck out of here fund". UTEP can raise tuition prices and try to get these bogus fees because they are the only game in town. Love the basketball team, hate the administration.

ECU basketball is pathetic. One of the reasons I disliked Barbee in the beginning was his loss to East Carolina. Glad things have changed.

I really hate the CUSA tournament setup. The Miners should be playing either the 1st or 3rd game that day. If UTEP wins they will play the first game on Friday, which is ridiculously early because of CUSA's shitty TV contract. The championship game is on CBS, but its only on at a regular time on the east coast. Waking up at 930 to watch it is pretty cool, but I doubt many other viewers are going to get up that early.

Hope the Miners can keep rolling. I think a win would lock up an at-large berth if we slip up in the CUSA Tournament. Going 15-1 in conference is great, no matter what league you play in.
UAB 67 UTEP 78
