So the question is, is this a junior varsity type thing or a legit D1 UTEP hockey team.

I don't see how it is stupid. Financially out of reach maybe but not stupid.

I'd love to see it. They could play where the El Paso Rhinos play. With title 9, I would rather UTEP focus on a baseball instead though.

I'm in. I'm sick of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Alcorn State, and Texas Southern. Bring on the big boys. I'll take our lumps in stride.

For whatever reason, a lot of media outlets are referring to Moore as a Junior but Vint as a sophomore.

You can red shirt a player to preserve a year of eligibility i.e Jalen Ragland. He is going to be a sophomore but he is redshirting. He can practice and travel with the team but he will not be playing. In 2013, he will still be a sophomore.
Yan can also medically redshirt a player. Malcolm Moore will still be a junior. I am assuming Hooper Vint will again be a freshman but I haven't read anywhere if he got his medical red shirt approved.
Gray shit is a little different. Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong. A gray shirt is someone who commits to a school in Feb but doesn't report to the school in the fall. This is more for football.
For example, a kid committed to a school this past Feb. He doesn't enroll until spring semester (this january). He joins the team the following Fall. Now you have a 19 or 20 year old Freshman instead of a 18 year old.

I would red shirt for the simple fact that we are loaded with freshman.
-C. Washburn -T. Howard -D. Watts -H. Vint -M. Moore -M. Willms
Jalen Ragland is red shirting this season so he will be a sophomore again next year with all six of these freshman.

I don't see it as an epic fail. What could they have done differently?

MWC isn't as attractive now with USU and SJSU. CUSA isn't all that with UNT and UTSA and FIU. It is a bummer either way.
Lets get UNLV, Nevada, CSU, Wyoming, UNM, UTEP, Tulsa, Rice, and Tulane together at an airport. USM if they don't mind bailing on ECU and Marshall.

It's who we are going to play. Happy about it is another subject. I just think there is going to be another airport meeting. I think we are going to be on the right side of it this time though.

I can't speak for MWC officials but the fans of MWC schools actually do want us. I think it is exit fees that are preventing us from moving over.

He has a sister and a house over there. That is not major ties. He respects the area. He respects the school. He might have sat down for an interview while in the area (for the funeral of his mother or for his basketball clinic) but he did not "interview for the job." He said no thanks to Memphis and Arizona because they wanted him to interview. There is not way he would interview for USM. He is ours.

We have yet to run out of dates for quality OOC games as is. No need to free up more. I prefer to keep NMSUx under our thumb and in a conference below us.

I don't think it is ever okay to lower expectations. I was shocked we lost to UTSA and SFA. It happened though. The same way I hope we knock off a couple power conference schools this coming season. Their fans will be saying what we are saying now. "No way should a PAC12 school lose to a CUSA school!" That is why we play the games...

I agree with most of what you're saying. However, UTEP blew a big lead to a bunch of freshman on their home floor. I dont care if Derrick Caracter was the whole offense or not. We had kicked their ass a month before without DC. Losing the way we did was unaceptable. I don't know if 12 points is really a big lead. It might go down as the most disappointing loss (for me) in my life time. It sucked. I just don't view it as unacceptable. They beat us. Even though we made the NIT, we were never in the running for an at-large berth, so not going the Dance should have come as no surprise. UNM didn't have their leading scorer for the game and the Pit was far from full. Its a game UTEP should have won. The NIT final four is played at Madison Square Garden, that should have been enough for CTF to motivate those players. Athletes should want to compete regardless of situation. Except for RC, the other seniors didn't give a shit about the NIT. It was obvious. Is that okay? Of course not. It is the reality though. I dont buy your excuse of "they already had their degrees and had already left school". What does that have to do with playing hard? Randy and Julyan aren't even using their degrees and probably won't for awhile. It is not an excuse. It is not a justification. It is just the reality of the situation. Once the team didn't make the NCAA, they didn't give a shit. I talked to Polk quite a bit on Twitter. While respectful, he pretty much told me that the season was over and they (the seniors) would not be returning to class. It is what it is. They should have played hard 100% of the time. It was obvious they didn't (with the exception of RC and the underclassmen). With our returning roster and so called "great recruits" coming in, we better not lose home games to Southland teams. Teams from the Southland are regular 16 seeds. That conference sucks. The schedule will be interesting to see, but losing those games are unacceptable for UTEP basketball, any time, any year! Under normal circumstances, I agree. As a UTEP fan, I simply never seen the cupboards left that bare before. I am glad Coach Floyd didn't go for the quick fix with JUCO's. I rather take a few bad losses and build toward a long term future. Something we haven't had since 1999.

At CUSAbbs, I constantly refute a lot of the talk about UTEP losing to Memphis in the CUSA title game. Yes, it was the biggest sports heartbreak of my life. It completely sucked. But I refute that we "should have" won because we had a lot of seniors. DC was our offense their junior year. He single handily carried UTEP to many victories. Losing him was huge. Yes, RC, JC, and CP were great seniors. Still, we lost DC and no one should have expected our seniors to be as as good without him. We were 15-1 with him. We were a third seed w/out him.
The NIT UNM game was pretty obvious. Except for RC, none of the seniors gave a shit about the game. They simply didn't. They already had their degrees, they had no interest in the NIT, and they weren't returning to UTEP after the game.
UTSA and SFA are what they are. Coach Floyd was starting from scratch. We lost. We will probably lose a game like that next season too. Our incoming freshmen and newbies will need that same buffer to adjust. It will be fun though.

Assuming your concerns are legit...
Coach Floyd has little to nothing to do with anything in your post. CUSA going 0-4 has nothing to do with Coach Floyd.
Sure, UTEP had a pretty fair chance to make it to the dance in Coach Floyd's first year. Technically it was a senior laden team. It is convenient that most forget that DC wasn't on that team. The 18 years prior to that season have nothing to do with Coach Floyd.
It would have been nice to make it to the post season this year. It wasn't very likely. It is obvious why.
We have a coach that is going to stick around awhile. It probably won't be next year but we will be winning NCAA Tourney games soon enough.

MinerMan2010, by your own accord, attendance was down because UTEP fans didn't care about CUSA east schools. I am certain UTEP fans would have even less excitement about UNT, UTSA, and Texas St. The fact they are in Texas isn't going to excite anyone. We need our AD to get aggressive and make deals with UNLV, Nevada, Fresno, CSU, and UNM - now.

There is some buzz that the BE wants 14 football playing schools and is eyeing a western school. If they yank UNLV I am going to jump off a cliff.
