14. Mike Price, UTEP It’s not just that Price’s Miner teams aren’t winning, it’s that his teams keep collapsing. He has been around since 2004 and the team isn’t getting much better.
Status: He’s still a big name and a big personality, but it’s the seventh year under his guidance and the results had better come.
Hmmmm.... I had to check and see if Kyyote or giblet wrote this article. Gosh darn it... wouldn't want to get mad or anything.
You ever been to a restaurant where the kids were acting like crazy little devils... AND the parents were these calm "non-believers in punishment" types... "Please, Jonathan... don't throw your food at people... they may NOT like it"
That's how I felt when I read this guy's article...
This writer doesn't have the juevos to Tell-It-Like-It-IS...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP)—New Mexico and basketball coach Steve Alford have agreed on a contract extension through 2020.
The school’s athletic department says details of the extension will be announced when the contract is complete.
Alford is 76-26 in three seasons at New Mexico, the highest winning percentage in program history for at least 100 games.
Athletic director Paul Krebs says Alford has raised the profile of the basketball program in the Mountain West Conference and nationally.
This season, New Mexico finished 30-5 while setting a school record for wins and playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time in five years.
Wow, 76% Winning Percentage. Realm had no idea Alford was that successful...[/color]

Even though Basketball season has ended... with the announcement that Tim Floyd is Utep's new coach... the ticket office has been doing brisk business.
And yeahhhh, ticket prices went up....
The Upper Level season tickets went up $15 (from $180 to $195).
The other season tickets went up an avereage of $25.
El Pasoans are careful about spending their dollars... BUT they will spend it when there is something worthwhile.
And Tim Floyd is it !!
While I dislike Barbee with a passion... at least he didn't leave Utep's recruiting cupboard bare like Rabedeaux and Sadler did.

strelz raised an interesting observation that is important for Basketball attendance.
Barbee had an adversarial relationship with the media... and that translated into a decrease in fan attendance, IMHO.
With Floyd being a popular hire... we can expect the expanded media coverage to translate into increased attendance.
I wonder if Stull will see this as an opportunity to increase ticket prices??
As a side note... when Floyd was rumored to already have accepted the Utep coaching job... my friends were yelling "Bull Shit" when Floyd suddenly withdrew from the position because of his father-in-law's illness.
But 2 days later this was no longer an issue and Floyd accepted the coaching position. What has changed?? Nothing....
So I think my friends had it right.
I am thinking Floyd wanted Phil Johnson to join him at Utep... and to do so meant a significant raise for an assistant coach from USC.
Something Stull wasn't willing to do.
But faced with the insurrection from Alumni over the prospect of Coach Randall Dickey... Stull capitulated on Floyd's demands.
Just wondering...

strelz,
I heard Randall Dickey was going to join his brother's staff at Univ of Houston.
No offense to the Dickeys... but after ALL the higher profile names being thrown out there... for Mack Rhoades to settle on Coach Dickey.
I wonder what happened...

However, my bro is asking... why are we excited about getting Floyd??
The guy has NEVER demonstrated outstanding coaching success anywhere... he has just ridden the horse he was given until a faster horse came along.
The reason he got the Coaching job at USC and Hornet Asst. job is because he is tied into the "Good ol' Boy Network".
The first barometer that he'll run the Miner program down is if you see the 4 incoming freshmen go elsewhere. Maybe lose some existing players as well.
Will Dickie stay on as an assistant when he was passed over like this in such a public fashion?? Can Floyd convince him to stay?? Can Floyd convince Madlock / Wagner to stay??
He is predicting Utep will get no more than 19 wins next year.
Personally... Realm is breathing a sigh of relief that it is Floyd and not Dickey. But... he's asking a good question.
Responses anyone??

realm, another thought--the big donors are just a little tired of stull and the revolving door in the basketball office...I think they would have anted up for tim or billy but nobody else...stull takes the cheap road with dickey...hey next year we don't wear nike we wear "dickies" Donor Overload... yep, I can see this happening because we predictably keep losing coaches to higher tier schools.
The Donor money situation is another indication of how much Utep misses the talents of Mack Rhoades. What Stull lacked in socializing, Mack made up for in his ability to schmooze with the donors.

I know very little about him. he is very quiet and has never been a head college coach. his brother james was 166-124 as ther head coach at texas tech but his last few years were more loses than wins. I really think stull and natalicio just want to save money. they will pepper the news sources with great stories about him but I think all of this is as a result of mike price being a disaster and no money coming in from football. strelz, interesting strategy on Bob's and Diana's part to save money due to finances... you gave an insightful answer.
Let me see if I understand the situation correctly... whatever the Men's Basketball coach gets... also has to be paid to the Women's Basketball coach.
Is this correct??
The Football program and (to a lesser extent) the Basketball program are linked together financially... therein lies the problem.
I hope Miner fans are united against this piss, poor choice of coaches and will let the Mucky Mucks know how you feel about this. I have already emailed Bob to let him know I think this sucks BIG TIME.
Bring Billy back to El Paso !!

Randall Dickey apparent frontrunner for head UTEP men's basketball coach By Bill Knight / El Paso Times Posted: 03/29/2010 12:08:40 PM MDT Randall Dickey (Courtesy UTEP athletics department) ?? UTEP athletics profile: Randall Dickey EL PASO -- UTEP assistant basketball coach Randall Dickey appears to be the frontrunner for the head coaching job, but a new contender from outside the program also is in the hunt. The Times has learned that a late applicant is under consideration. People familiar with the search did not divulge his name. Dickey has been on the Miners' basketball staff since 2004. He formerly was an assistant at Oklahoma State under Eddie Sutton. UTEP athletic executives conducted personal interviews in Dallas with two other candidates who no longer appear to be in the mix. They are Tim Floyd, an assistant coach with the NBA's New Orleans Hornets, and Russell Springmann, an assistant coach at the University of Texas at Austin. Former Miners' head coach Billy Gillispie received a telephone interview, an indication that interest in him was mild. The UTEP job opened last week when Tony Barbee took the Auburn job. Coach Billy is OUR choice.
We're divided on Floyd. One of our observations... We never felt Floyd succeeded at any of the places he coached at... and were amazed that USC hired him.
Even at USC... Floyd didn't especially shine.
To be honest... while he was a GREAT assistant to Haskins... why do we think he would succeed at Utep as a Coach??
For Realm... and 2 other Alumni... Coach Billy Gillespie would make the BEST possible coaching choice.
If he is available... and he wants to come to Utep... can we put aside our egos and make it happen.
Plz Diana... let it be so.

Thanks for passing this along... with the added tidbits on the particulars for each candidate.
Very interesting reading...
Especially in Floyd's case because I thought maybe something came out of the NCAA investigation at USC.
For Realm's part... I believe the player's are making their input known that they want Randall Dickey. Much like the football players, back in 1990, letting the administration know that their choice is Gary Nord.
Nord looked like a winner his first year while those players were there. But after that first year... Nord's coaching tanked.
Realm believes Randall Dickey would be Nord II.
The Miner fanbase will take a lot... BUT they will NOT like this decision one bit.

SInce winning the National Title, UTEP is 7 - 14 and one of those wins was a "Regional 3rd place game". 9 "one and done"s, including the last 3. UTEP needs to start winning some games, duh right? We are no better than many one-bid leagues, they get lucky more than UTEP. Murray St, Northwestern St, Hampton, Siena, etc, can win games, why can't UTEP? This is why I'm so bent out of shape. When we have the chance to make a statement... we fail miserably.
We don't even fight back...
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets pissed.

11 Conference USA 44.70 39.26 12 West Coast 44.15 40.15 13 Horizon League 43.61 39.35 14 Colonial Athletic 42.79 38.12 Disagree with your statement about the Horizon League. As you can see, CUSA is barely ahead of the Horizon. Butler beat Northwestern, Ohio St, and Xavier, all better than any non conference win UTEP has. Butler is a bad match up for UTEP, they play smart and can shoot. I'm no expert, but why is it that CUSA has 7 teams in post season play and Horizon League has only 2? Besides the obvious fact that CUSA has more members. And, Horizon has no one in the NIT. It's Green Bay in the CBI. I know what the stats say but think there are factors not reflected in them. uncledoug,
You make a very good point regarding the Horizon League... but Butler has an impressive OOC schedule(I've listed them somewhere) and they definitely showed they are competitive.
We'll have to watch today and see how they look...

I disagree with most of the statements made in this thread. Who really cares what Muench thinks. I mean really, the guy is an Aggie. Most of the tough games are on the road. I don't think the schedule is set up to make Price a winner in his last season. The home schedule is pretty boring though, I'll give you that... Doug,
I think it's absolutely GREAT that you don't agree with me(us?).
Your opinion is valued... just like anyone else's. That your view differs from me is healthy and signals an audience that thinks for itself.
We don't want to see sheep on this board...
Sports, by its nature, is cause for disagreement. As long as we keep this in mind... it is hard to get bent out of shape over anything said on our Board.
Sometimes I look at Joe Muench and I see him as a more high-profiled version of Realm in the Den or Digs. People assumed I said things to get under their skin... which isn't true... it just looks that way.
I'm going to give Joe Muench the SAME benefit of a doubt... until he looks me in the eye and says "Gotcha !!".

On the plus side... glad to see we're resuming the series with New Mexico. I hope this means a home-and-home series.
I understand everyone's frustrations. Joe Muench mentioned that this was set up so that Price's last year at Utep would be a winning one... and he would be seen as riding off into the sunset as a winner.
In other words... INSTEAD of raising the program... they lowered the competition.
