As far as Barbee leaving next year, I don't think so, and here is why:
(Go to the Conclusion) if you want to skip to the punchline.
1. CTB has to be unspecific about next year in order to enhance his prospects for a big raise. If he said, "Oh yeah, I'll be back next year for sure" there would be less reason for the students to vote on increased tuition, etc. Unfortunately, the more he makes us sweat, the bigger his raise.
I remember back in the '90s, the Bear, with advice from Nolan Richardson and others, started interviewing for head coaching jobs at other universities and he wound up with a decent raise. Did he intend to actually move away from El Paso? No way. He did what he had to do to get a raise.
2. Someone said on this forum said that Barbee should follow Coach Cal's lead and wait for the right job. DePaul ain't it. But it's enough to make us worry. CTB would have to start over like he did at UTEP to create a winning program. Why would he disappear into obscurity for a few years when he has a solid organization at UTEP to keep a run alive next year. Even if UTEP looses Caracter, the experience and exposure from this year's run will be remembered next year.
3. It would be a blow to CTB's credibility. Take a look at coaches of the past who have used UTEP as a stepping stone.
Doc Sadler has been at Nebraska for enough time to build a program (5 yrs?) but they are 14-17 overall, 2-14 in conference with an RPI of 154. When Sadler was in Barbee's situation and asked if he would stay at UTEP, he said "Yes, I love El Paso". Then when he got the Nebraska offer he said "I'd love to stay at UTEP, but we are talking about NEBRASKA!"
Well, Nebraska may be looking for a new head coach soon. Sadler might be about to crash in flames.
Then there is Billy Gillispie. There is no doubt he was using UTEP as a stepping stone because he never signed his contract. Duh?!
Billy had many great attributes. Great recruter and the players loved him and many have said that Doc Sadler built his success on Billy Gillispie's recruits.
Where is Billy now? Crashed in flames, and Kentucky now has the well established Coach Cal at the helm.
Getting back to the credibility theme; Would CTB's leaving UTEP when he has an awesome team of juniors who have made a deep run into the NCAA tournament be a negative item on his resume? That depends on who you ask. But, it would definately put him in the same catagory as Sadler and Gillispie.
Conclusion: So, who is the smarter coach? Gillispie, Sadler or Barbee? If we use results as a measure, Barbee wins hands down. Will he stay another year? I say yes.
Will he move on after that? That depends on El Paso. We need to make it worth his while to stay. If we can make his life very comfortable, he might stay.
Why would he stay for a long period of time? Headline exposure. Everybody expects the Kentuckys and Dukes, etc, to win. They don't expect UTEP to keep winning. We flash in the pan occasionanly, then we go away for several years. But if we started to make an impact every year, CTBs name would be all over that. Think about Gonzaga. How many times have they been a Cinderella? Mid-Majors always make a lot of smoke when they perform well. When the majors do it, it's expected.
So what do you call a coach who can turn a mid-major into a regular Sweet-Sixteen visitor? The answer is... Genius!
Will CTB stay at UTEP for another year or 2 or more?
Is CTB smarter than most other coaches in UTEP history?
Will UTEP make a run for the final 4 next year, even without Derrick Caracter?
