Are these conferences only interested in a school's football program? I know ours is a steaming pile, but why wouldn't our basketball tradition (and future) make us just as attractive as these other schools?

They are taking Tulane because of their market. No other reason. Their football sucks as well.
ECU is football only. I would hope UTEP would refuse a football only invite to any conference.

Middle Tenn and FAU today too. Awful. Bunch of Sun Belt teams nobody cares about.
