No we aren't scheduled to play anytime soon, or are we? It's not like UTEP announces future schedules like all other FBS schools do. Anyway, UL-Monroe went out and beat #8 Arkansas this weekend, while the Miners lost to a supposedly worse Ole Miss squad. It got me to thinking about the differences between the two schools.
La-Monroe re-joined FBS in 1994 playing as an Independent before joining the Sun Belt. Since 94 their overall record is (71-136) with ZERO bowl appearances. Since 1994, UTEP is (78-134-1) with 4 bowl appearances, but no wins. So we're a few bowl games better than them, but have the same amount of bowl victories. Impressive!
Since 1994, UL-Monroe has beat 4 SEC teams. Kentucky, Miss St, Alabama, and Arkansas. Not only have we not beaten any SEC teams during that time frame, we haven't beaten any BCS auto qualifying conference teams! Not a single one.
UL-Monroe averaged 9,826 fans a game in 2000, 7,664 in 2001, 11,298 in 2003, and 15,512 last year. The lowest I could find for UTEP during that time frame was 20,009 in 2003, which is still 8,000 more than UL-Monroe.
UTEP plays in a better conference, has better facilities, is on TV more, and has more money, how can La-Monroe beat SEC teams, but we can't? It's not the fans, if UL-Monroe can draw 15k last season and beat Arkansas, how come we can't? This is La-Monroe, supposedly one of the worst Sun Belt teams.
Conclusion: UTEP is no better than UL-Monroe in football.
