You think he'll redshirt? If Malcom Moore's knee isn't 100% we may need this kid for some depth next year. Plus, with Floyd's instruction, I think he may come along pretty quickly. At least he isn't another Kareem Cooper-type marshmallow with weight issues...
Having never seen him, I'm pretty excited about this signing!

I did a little more research on Willms. According to Rivals.com, he's a 3-star recruit who also got offers from Texas A&M, UNLV, San Diego State, and Marquette, among others (pretty impressive that we landed him when you see who else wanted him). Curiously, he's listed at 6-11 on their site, but 7-1 in our reports... I wonder which one is more accurate??
Anyway, the scouting report says he could have scored more if he'd wanted to, but his high school team averaged almost 95 points a game, so he focused more on his defense and rebounding. He apparently has soft hands and runs the floor very well for a guy his size, and has a nice touch from outside as well as good interior moves. Sounds to me like we really scored on this kid!!

I would red shirt for the simple fact that we are loaded with freshman.
-C. Washburn -T. Howard -D. Watts -H. Vint -M. Moore -M. Willms
Jalen Ragland is red shirting this season so he will be a sophomore again next year with all six of these freshman.

This may be stupid question and I should know this, but how does that work? I thought a redshirt was mainly used for injuries. I've heard of "gray-shirting" players for football, but I'm not sure what that means either...
So you can redshirt any number of players, knowing their scholarships are unavailable even though they're not playing? Is that correct?

You can red shirt a player to preserve a year of eligibility i.e Jalen Ragland. He is going to be a sophomore but he is redshirting. He can practice and travel with the team but he will not be playing. In 2013, he will still be a sophomore.
Yan can also medically redshirt a player. Malcolm Moore will still be a junior. I am assuming Hooper Vint will again be a freshman but I haven't read anywhere if he got his medical red shirt approved.
Gray shit is a little different. Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong. A gray shirt is someone who commits to a school in Feb but doesn't report to the school in the fall. This is more for football.
For example, a kid committed to a school this past Feb. He doesn't enroll until spring semester (this january). He joins the team the following Fall. Now you have a 19 or 20 year old Freshman instead of a 18 year old.

I read that Hooper Vint did get his medical redshirt. Once a player uses their medical redshirt, they cannot redshirt later. However, if you redshirt first and then get injured in another year, you can qualify for a medical redshirt.
I agree with Binks, we need at least one other player to redshirt with Ragland. Should be this guy. He's too skinny to really help out down low. With a healthy frontline, we can really do some damage. Lang really impressed me and Bohannon is a pretty good player when he's focused. Have Moore and Vint come off the bench and we have a pretty good rotation. Unless this guy is super talented, I don't see him playing enough to warrant not redshirting him.
Binks, the way you explained gray shirting sounds about right to me. And yeah, gray shirting is only a football thing.

For whatever reason, a lot of media outlets are referring to Moore as a Junior but Vint as a sophomore.

Great article, thanks MM. This kid sounds like he's going to be focused and attentive... I cannot wait to see what he can do with four years under Floyd and Foster!!
