Utep was hoping Tulsa would be looking past this game in anticipation of the BIG finale against Houston… if that was an example of overlooking… I would hate to play a focused Tulsa team.
Tulsa is riding the hottest winning streak(11) in Cusa and it looked like it as they played free and loose and quickly built up a 14 point lead.
Utep seemingly was able to get back into the game when Leilyon Myers ran it in from the 1 yard line to make the game closer at 21-15 with 3 minutes to go before the half.
Then Tulsa broke Utep’s back by returning the kick-off back for a score and followed that up with a 2 point conversion to make the game 29-15 at half time.
2nd Half belonged entirely to Tulsa and the most telling fact is Tulsa converted 6 of 7 third downs and did not punt all day.
Tulsa’s Tyrunn Walker was an intimidating one man defensive wrecking crew and it seemed like he was everywhere until he was finally flagged for a Flagrant Personal Foul against a Utep quarterback and kicked out of the game.
The final score was Tulsa winning the game 57-28 in front of 23,349 subdued fans who came out to wish the Utep Seniors a fond farewell.
A couple of weeks ago, I showed the stats for the Utep vs Tulane game that displayed a lot of parity except for the score where Utep won BIG over Tulane 44 - 7. I’m seeing that trend here again and it puzzles me because, IMHO, this game was completely dominated by Tulsa.
...............Tot Yds… Pass Yds… Rush Yds… 1st Downs… 3rd D%.... Pen Yds….. Turnovers
Tulsa….....500……..….. 283…….…. 217…………. 24…………85%.........4/46 ………...2
Utep…..... 443……..….. 266……….. 177…………. 28……..… 53%.........6/66……….…2
Utep is playing with more defensive and offensive intensity than might be expected from a rebuilding team… but is there enough here to warrant another year for Coach Price??
The 23,349 in attendance Saturday brought the 2011 total to 158,486 or about 26,414 per game. The same steady, predictable yearly decline in attendance by the fans. All this despite the Utep administration pulling out all the stops with all kinds of gimmicks to arouse fan interest.
But it never seemed to happen.
El Paso seems to be saying “No” to Coach Price and that should be enough to spell the end of an era “IF” Stull is being honest with himself.
As MinerMan already stated, Coach Larry Coker has already brought excitement to the Univ of Texas at San Antonio in their first year with over 32K fan attendance while still playing as an FCS Independent. I expect that excitement to grow when they transition to the WAC next year.
If I"m looking at how much excitement is being generated by college football... I'm thinking UTSA has already passed Utep by.
Something Stull should also be considering when making up his mind on Coach Price.
