I couldn't go to the game in la screwces last night, and only caugh the last five minutes of the first half (and then the disastrous second) on the radio, so not much in the way of analysis. All I can say is that our baby Miners did an outstanding job of hanging with a talented veteran team for 20 minutes. Hopefully they can extend that to 40 the next time.
The first half (according to Teich) was masterfully managed by CTF. We slowed the game down as much as possible to limit their transition game, played solid D, and had few turnovers or bad possessions. In fact, we flustered them so badly that they got called for two technicals for taunting us after they had scored (showing that aggie "class" we've known so well-- I guess Reggie Theus's megalomaniacal ghost still haunts them). We were only down 38-42 at the half, and that's after we stopped them on their final possession and Hooper Vint ran the floor and dunked it at the buzzer. Great way to end a solid first half.
Then the aggies came out of the locker room for the second half... and we didn't. After a 15-4 run to begin the half, the game was essentially over. We stopped rebounding, started turning it over, and our defense was almost non-existent. We did make a mini-run to cut the lead (which had inflated to as much as 22) to 10 with about 3 minutes left, but it was too little too late.
We got some great experience, being on the road in the toughest of environments, and played about as well as a bunch of freshmen could against four seniors and a junior. I expected a loss, and in the end, 73-89 is about right considering the matchup.
My beef is with nmsu coach Marvin Menzies, who had this to say: "Anytime you can beat UTEP, it feels a little better."
Yeah, I know that quote is less than inflammatory, and this is probably their biggest rivalry (aside from UNM). But Floyd was nothing but complementary toward their team afterwards, and all their coach can say after his senior-laded team beats our freshmen is, essentially, "nanny-nanny-boo-boo."
I hope we continue to improve over the next two weeks, and get them back in our building with a little more experience and confidence. Maybe then we can repay the favor. Stick YOUR head in doo-doo, Marvin.
