“Not bad for a quant, but a dog with different fleas” --Gordon Gekko (Wall Street)Honestly, I had no more interest in this turkey of a game than I did watching the Manny Pacquiao-Marquez 3 fight. For me, the winner of this fight was already a given.
Likewise for the ECU-Utep football game, the eventual winner could only generate a “MEH” kind of a response.
ONLY 25,571 bothered to show up at the Sun Bowl... meaning 26K went "MEH" as well.
What would matter... is if we beat someone worth beating... and ECU ain’t it.
This weekend’s game with Tulsa will get my interest. So far it hasn’t happened BUT if Utep wants a LAST chance to get my attention –--this is the last chance for it.
Cheerleaders like to say --- "A win is a win, no matter if it’s by 1 point or 100".
Realist keep their eye on the scoreboard too… and we note that despite the win – we’re in 5th place in the Cusa-West division.
5th Place?? ---MEH

Like I have always said, who has/does UTEP beat? ECU is now 4-6, a cheerleader will point out who they played and lost to. A 4-6 record means you're not very good, no matter who you play. Same for a 5-5 record. UTEP is very average and I'm tired of being average and its sick to see fans sit back and think that Mike Price football will get us places.
Beating Tulsa would be a good accomplishment for this team, but not something great. Winning home games against conference foes should be expected. Beating bad teams should be expected. That is why I don't celebrate wins over ECU and NMSU. 70% of the FBS can beat the teams we beat this year. So on Saturday, if UTEP wins, lots of posters will act like we just beat LSU. Give me a break. Beating Tulsa is nice, but it doesn't mean fucking shit to the college football world.
We need to expect more. This past year NMSU beat Minnesota, FIU beat Louisville, and UNT beat Indiana. Why doesn't UTEP schedule the bad teams in BCS leagues? There is no way in hell UTEP can not get a home and home with Vanderbilt or Duke. Bob Stull would rather schedule a shit FCS team, than try and build a better football program.

I totally agree, MinerMan. The problem is, though, that the majority of the "fans" here in El Paso are total bandwagoners. In other words, no matter who we play, if they see a winning record then they'll start going to games. Conversely, if we put together a competetive schedule full of quality teams and lose half those games (and that's a generous estimate, to be sure) people won't look at the teams that beat us or that we managed to beat and say, "Hey, at least they were good wins or acceptable losses because those were quality teams." They'll just look at the crappy record and won't go to any games.
Stull realizes that if he schedules shitty teams and we beat them, it may put more butts in the stands than if we lost to a few top notch opponents. Therefore, we play (and sometimes manage to lose to) the Appalachian States and Stony Brooks of the college football dregs.
Do I think it's a crappy way to do things? Definitely. But there it is....
