It was a cold, vacant night in Mobile, Alabama... No, No.
It was an unexpectedly tough winless Memphis team that kept the Miners from reaching another bowl... Naw, not that.
It was a wind-swept, sullen day in Albuquerque, New Mexico... Nope, that's not it either.
It was a football game in Houston, Texas... a day just like any other game day the Miners would play...
And the question we ALL would have on our minds these days... would the Miners come to play OR not??
Today, at Rice Stadium, it was another in a series of NOT days.
Utep was 4-4 coming into this game after playing a Univ of Southern Miss team tough going into the 3rd quarter. Surely, they would beat a 2-6 Rice team that had looked lost in losing 3 games in a row.
BUT this was November... and Price lead teams have a solid reputation for tanking it BIGTIME during the month of November.
A listless Miner defense allowed the Owls 673 yards on offense while mustering up only 371 offensive yards of their own.
In almost every offensive category, Rice had almost twice the output that Utep did... AND Rice managed a 41 - 31 lead with 3 minutes remaining before allowing the Miners to score a meaningless touchdown that ended the game 41-37.
There is no other explanation than the Miners are soft and coddled and haven't had their bodies and spirits forged tough through training and discipline to withstand the rigors of a complete football season.
This is, unfortunately, another trademark of a Price coached team. We've seen it at Utep for, what, 9 seasons now.
Damn you November !!
