Surprised to seem them mentioned among the nation's best... BUT this bodes well for Utep Basketball.
Culpepper has his size working against him on his quest for the next level... while Stone's size is working FOR him.
Lot of teams seem to be infatuated with Stone's size for a guard... and in his camp try outs he has raised his stock with his 3 point shooting.
Good luck to them both... Realm

I honestly think Julyan would make a perfect point guard for certain teams who have a true scorer at the 2-spot and don't need him to light up the scoreboard (or my Bulls, who need another guard to backup D Rose). I think his size, passing skills, and tremendous rebounding and defensive ability will definitely bring success in the NBA if someone will give him a chance. Offense can be fixed and your shooting ability can improve, but you can't teach the hustle and determination that Stone already possesses.
Randy, on the other hand, is a long shot. I LOVE him, and was simply amazed at his athletic ability, but he's undersized for a shooting guard (which I believe him to be, though they listed him as a PG) and he's a streak shooter. The article was dead-on when it said he could shoot you out of a game as readily as shoot you in it.
I'd love to see both of them sign with someone, but as in the past, I think they'll be overlooked and disregarded because they played here. If Fili Rivera and Omar Thomas didn't make it, Julyan and Randy probably won't either. It's bullshit, but it's reality.

I don't think they'll be overlooked because they played here. Rodney Stuckey played at Eastern Washington and was #15 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. Morris Almond of Rice was taken in the first round that year too. EWU and Rice are worse basketball programs by far. Fili and OT did not make the league because they were good college players like Antonie Gillespie and Brandon Wolfram, but not NBA caliber players. OT was the MVP of the Italian League this year and I'm sure Fili is playing somewhere overseas too. OT wasn't quick enough for the 2 or 3 spot and Fili didn't have that great of an outside shot and probably didn't leave the "streetball" flashiness at the door. I think both players have a shot at getting drafted. Stone will have the better career because of his passing and rebounding. Culpepper will be an 11th or 12th man. If Stone could shoot like Randy, he would be a lottery pick and if Randy had Stone's height, he would be a lottery pick too.

I knew neither one of them would be drafted; I just hope they get a chance to sign with a club now that the draft is over.
When it's all said and done, you have to agree that school reputation trumps talent a lot of the time. How many busts have come out of Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, etc? If a guy gets drafted from Rice, it's because he proved himself to be one of the best players in the country. We have NBA talent here at UTEP, I know it; but nobody outside of C-USA does.

I disagree. School reputation doesn't mean much to an NBA team. They want talent.
