I'm sooo glad to hear this because I think Billy is a great coach and should be coaching somewhere... anywhere.
AND I think he's a GREAT fit for Texas Tech.
Please... Please... Please... let Utep continue the series with Texas Tech.
I think both schools would benefit with the inherent fan interest on both sides.

I was kinda bummed to hear that Gillispie got hired at Tech... for the simple reason that I think he can turn them into a major player in the next few years just like he did for A&M. I'm still amazed that to this day, after four years under his guidance, A&M's basketball team went from an absolute laughingstock to a perennial top-25 program, so I really didn't want him doing it for an in-state rival. (I rather like being the only Texas team with a national championship, and now that the Longhorns are gone from the dance, that reign is still intact.) I was scared to death that he'd get hired at Houston earlier this year and we'd have them to deal with twice a year in our own conference...
I'm convinced that the reason he failed to work the same magic at Kentucky as he did here at UTEP and at A&M is because that program considers anything less than a national championship a total failure. Add to that the different type of players he had, who were more than likely total divas who thought they were NBA-ready as freshmen and probably refused to buy into his system. The result was lackluster performances that led to rifts between coach and players, and naturally, the fans and the media sided with the players. I can't say for sure, but that's what I think probably happened.
Tech made a very savvy move hiring him, and I think we'll see him turn them around just like he did for us. He's a hell of a recruiter and an excellent X's and O's coach who gets the utmost effort from his players. Any UTEP fan who saw how his Miner teams played can attest to that.
That being said... Tech had better shove an iron-clad contract with no escape clause under his nose, and then videotape him signing it. A leopard never changes its spots, and after he pulled the exact same "sit on my unsigned contract and use it as leverage" shit with both UTEP and A&M (although I was GLAD he did it to the Aggies, cuz I still maintain that their AD headhunting him during the season should have been some kind of rules violation) I can easily see him bolting again if success at Tech brings in better offers.
Bottom line, I hope we continue our home-and-away series with Tech, cuz it just got a WHOOOOOOLE lot more interesting!
