UTEP coach Tim Floyd announced the one-game suspension of freshmen Michael Perez and John Bohannon on Monday for "lack of academic performance." Perez and Bohannon did not practice with the team Monday and will not play Wednesday night when the Miners meet Marshall in the Don Haskins Center. "They are freshmen who should have figured it out by now, figured out why they are here," Floyd said. "Hopefully, this will be a learning experience for them. If not, there are a lot of young men who want to get a college education at a quality institution like UTEP, one with a good basketball program."
Bohannon, a 6-foot-10 center from the Dallas suburb of Lancaster, is averaging 5.3 points and 5.7 rebounds a game.
He has started 10 games for the Miners and scored 15 points in UTEP's win over Memphis Saturday. Perez, a 6-3 guard from Tucson, Ariz., averages 1.7 points and 0.8 assists a game. He has been the first guard off the bench but missed three games in February with an ankle injury and played only in the final minutes against Memphis due to strep throat. "I've been really proud of the precedent our seniors have set," Floyd said.
"I expect these guys to follow their example. We will continue to monitor their progress the rest of the semester and any hiccups will lead to further suspensions -- regardless if it is in the conference tournament or in postseason play. I think both Mike and Bo are good persons. But there is more to it than being a good person and a good player. - E.P. Times

Wow. Kudos to Floyd for putting the kids' future ahead of a basketball game (albeit a very important one). I hate to play without them, but this shows everyone that Floyd truly cares about his players and not just his win total.

Sucks not having Bohannon, Perez hasn't shown me much this year, hopefully he improves for next year.
