Would any of you guys think its a good idea? Say if the MWC got a better tv deal, would that sway your decision? I think UTEP would be dumb to turn down an invite to the MWC. The MWC is better top to bottom in football and mens basketball. Even with UU, BYU, and TCU leaving.
One of the reasons for joining CUSA was to remain with SMU, Rice, and Tulsa. What good has this done? Our football team made still can't good players with all of our Texas ties. It limped into a bowl game this year after 4 bowl-less seasons. TCU was the only Texas team in the MWC, how can they get good players?? Easily, by winning. It doesn't matter where you are located, if you can win games, then players will want to play for you.
Mike Price had back to back 8 win seasons and with increased exposure in Texas what has he done with it? Absolutely nothing! UTEP will likely finish 6-7 and have a 5th straight losing season, with all of our Texas players. Again, what good has joining CUSA done for UTEP football?
Basketball recruiting in Texas is not a big deal, UTEP has never recruiting the majority of its players from here, so why not join the MWC? San Diego St, UNLV, New Mexico, Fresno, and Nevada are WAY better basketball games than Memphis plus ANY 4 CUSA schools. I think UTEP should do whatever it takes to join the MWC.
Possible MWC:
Nevada - Football team is in Top 25, hoops traditionally good
Fresno St - Solid football team, hoops ok
Boise St - Great Top 15 team always, hoops sub-par
San Diego St - Football team on the rise, solid hoops program
UNLV - sorry football program, solid hoops program
New Mexico - Solid hoops program, football on the downfall
Wyoming - ok at both
Colorado St - ok at both
Air Force - Solid football, crappy in basketball
Hawai'i (football only) - went to BCS game, good for recruiting
UTEP
Utah St - solid hoops program, sorry in football
Why would we want to remain in CUSA? Memphis basketball is not enough. What if Houston were to leave to the Big East? Who would we replace them with? LaTech, NMSU, North Texas, UTSA??? No thanks!
