Barbee to pay Utep 1 year of Salary to Leave??

In the event Barbee accepts employment as head basketball at another Division IA university other than UTEP(except as permitted under Paragraph VI), or in any capacity with a NBA team, Barbee will pay UTEP, within sixty(60) days following Barbee's departure from Utep, as follows:

Realm tried to find confirmation of Doug in Austin's comment that Utep had been paid $300K by Auburn already.

I couldn't find it.

Here is what I did find..

The previous Auburn coach, Jeff Lebo, made $785K his last year before being fired. He had a reputation for being an excellent X's and O's guy but simply could not recruit well… especially within the state of Alabama. Lebo did well to get his team to 24-12(10-6)last year and should have gone to the NCAA's but it was not enough to save his job. His teams have basically played well fundamentally and have pretty much represented themselves well off the court and in the classroom.

Auburn will be playing in the brand new $92 million Auburn Arena next season. That should help Barbee with IN-STATE recruiting.

At Auburn, Barbee will be paid a base salary of $225,000 but will earn $1.5 million annually over the next 6 years with the extra money coming from endorsements and television, radio and Internet rights along with fundraising and personal appearances. He will also receive two dealer cars or car allowances equaling 5 percent of his base salary. He is also eligible for academic and performance bonuses, but those details were not released.

While the $1.5 million is twice the salary of his coaching predecessor… it is still far down in the Auburn sports food chain.

Currently, Auburn pays football Coach Chizik $2.1 million as a base salary. When Coach Tuberville left Auburn as the football coach, he was at $2.8 million with a contract that automatically increased every year such that he would have received a $3.4 million base salary.

Barbee is an example of a guy who had an UNEVEN career at Utep... but still came out smelling like a rose.
