Have you guys seen the new schedule/team photo poster for the men's basketball team? I picked one up at the CBA bookstore yesterday, and it is just about the most ridiculous thing they've done if the history of ever. (Not quite as galactically stupid as when they renamed the Buzzards the El Paso Cow Patties, but...)
First the good: the theme of the poster was a clever idea. This year's catch phrase is "Bringin' Back the 80's," implying that this year's team is so talented, it will remind us of the glory days in the 80's when we were ranked in the top 25 and competing for a conference championship every year. (And I hope that's true!!) It also features some cool retro lettering, and lists the impressive basketball accomplishments of that decade.
But the bad is BAAAAAD: the laughable costumes they made the players wear for the "80's" photo shoot are just a crime. They look like $20 Halloween costumes from Savers, and you can just read the players' minds by the looks on their faces... "DAFUC ARE YOU MAKING US WEAR?!"
They have the Washburn brothers in cheap-ass Ghostbusters uniforms complete with inflatable plastic backpacks. Matt Willms is wearing a Def Leppard t-shirt and a crazy mullet wig, and rocking an inflatable plastic guitar (shit, at least borrow a REAL one). Malcolm Moore is dressed as the Karate Kid, and next to him is the most pissed-off dude on the whole poster (I don't know which player it is since they also didn't put any of their names on it) who is extremely unimpressed by his Apollo Creed boxing outfit and gigantic afro (which isn't even accurate if you remember Carl Weathers from the movies). The look on this guy's face speaks VOLUMES as far as what the players thought of this idea...
Anyway, it's pretty bad. I understand what they were going for, and some of the costumes don't look completely horrible (Tyler Tafoya's Marty McFly pose is okay), but overall I think there will be far more people laughing at it than inspired by it. If they had just spent a little more time getting some semi-accurate costumes, it could have been really cool. As it is, though, I'm afraid this poster may just be the worst one we'll ever see.
You'll see what I mean when you get a copy.
