Just went to this game... I'm hoarse from yelling at the #*$%#* refs. They tried like hell to hand Tulane a win in our building. Three key plays that may have cost us the game:
1) With under 5 minutes remaining and a two point lead (I think), the refs saddle Julyan Stone with his 4th foul when he drove the lane and the defender BACKPEDALED and tripped. Shoulda been a 3-point play, instead Tulane got the ball and Julyan got a charging call and took a seat.
2) With under 4 minutes to play and a five point lead, a Tulane player on a fast break barrels into the paint, picks up his dribble when the Miner defense collapses on him, takes three huge steps (TRAVELLING, ANYONE?) and kicks the ball outside for a 3-pointer. Shoulda been a turnover, instead they cut the lead to two.
3) With under 3 minutes to play and a 6 point lead, a loose ball under the Tulane basket draws a crowd of players. John Bohannon dives in and grabs the ball, and the refs blow the whistle. Jump ball, right? Wrong. Foul on Bohannon, two free throws for Tulane.
There were other plays as well, such as several moving screens and more traveling violations that went uncalled, but ultimately we were able to overcome them. Culpepper had a horrendous shooting night (3-10 from the field, 3-9 from the line) but played great defense. Jeremy Williams played sparingly with foul trouble, then Gabe McCulley got in foul trouble while filling in. Our defense looked lost at times in the first half, but luckily picked it up in the final 20.
Overall, a frustrating game against a team that seems better than their record would indicate, but a hard-fought win nonetheless. I just hope we clean things up before we go to Tulsa-- that's gonna be a hard game to win if we don't play better than we did tonight.
That's my two cents. Thanks for indulging my babbling.
