I hear a rumor that starting this fall Utep will have a hockey team. I think it would be awesome to go to hockey games! What do y'all think about this?

Pretty ridiculous in my opinion. The DHC cannot hold a hockey game because of its seating configuration. As Binks asked, where did this rumor come from?

Doesn't sound feasible to me. Who would we play? Where would we play? And aside from myself (GO STARS!), who in this town would even support a hockey team? This freakin' city won't even sell out a basketball game unless the team goes on a winning streak...
I would personally love to see a UTEP hockey team, but methinks this is just a wild rumor (which nobody seems to have heard).

Well after a google search or two, it does appear that UTEP might have a ACHA Division 2 team this upcoming season. There isn't much info out there. We'll see if they actually play and are able to compete. Heres a map of ACHA D2 teams. I'd love to see it. They could play where the El Paso Rhinos play. With title 9, I would rather UTEP focus on a baseball instead though.

I don't think a scholarship Hockey or Baseball program is ever headed UTEP's way. They barely turn a profit as it is. Bringing back UTEP Baseball would be stupid. Maybe if we dropped Football, having a baseball team would not be a bad idea, but that will never happen.

It is legit! Their first season is this fall. They will be playing where the Rhino's play. UTEP's full schedule isn't out yet but I found one of UTEP's opponents. I took a look at TCU's hockey schedule and they are scheduled to play UTEP: freeteams.net/tcuicehockey/schedule.html |

In an amazing coincidence, I happened to eat at Jaxon's tonight, and one of their servers is a player on the team. I was wearing a UTEP cap and a Dallas Stars t-shirt, and he said, "Did you know UTEP has a hockey team now?" He told me they are not an official "team" as of yet, but are classified as a hockey "club," meaning they aren't technically D1 and don't award scholarships. The UTEP squad's players are basically participating on their own volition, and many are involved in other activities (this kid, for instance, is also a drummer in the marching band) and are just doing it because they love to play hockey. They will be playing other "clubs" (including the TCU club mentioned in the above post) and haven't put together a full schedule as of yet, so maybe the UTEP site is waiting for more news before announcing anything. They will be playing at the same rink as the Rhinos, and he asked me to put the word out and try to generate as much fan support as I can. With some good crowds and a little success, maybe the program can flourish and expand.

That shows you how small this world of ours is hahaha! That kid is gonna be busy this fall! I know the band is no joke since the new director got here. Which Jaxon's does this kid work at??? Maybe I can go get some more info from him. Did he say anything about a schedule or when and who they are playing?

I love hockey...watched the Rangers growing up in New York...the Stanley Cup was exciting this years but the devils went out early in the finals...I announced the El Paso Generals hockey for 4 seasons and they were super with big crowds.

The only Jaxon's location now that the original changed ownership is the one over by the Wal-Mart on Mesa, in the Steinmart parking lot, where Outback used to be a while ago. He told me his name when we sat down but I can't remember it, but I'm sure you could find him easily enough. If you sit on the left side of the restaurant, he may even be your waiter. The reason we even got on the subject was because he commented on my Stars shirt (he's a Michigan native and a huge RedWings fan, so he kinda gave me some flak) and then saw my UTEP cap and told me about the club.
Anyway, the only opponent he mentioned was TCU, since they are trying to find other "clubs" to play against. I told him I belonged to this message board and that we had just been discussing UTEP hockey, and he asked me to put out the word that it's true. Sorry to have doubted you, utep88!

It's all good haha! I am kinda excited for this. Hopefully having a Michigan native on the team will have an impact on how good they will be. i know it will be their first year, but if they have a decent season, maybe the crowds will show up.
