Pathetic. We couldn't BUY a rebound tonight; this was a matchup between one of the worst rebounding teams in the nation (us) and one of the best (them), and it showed to the tune of a 23-42 drubbing on the boards. If either team missed, there was a white jersey grabbing the ball amidst three blue ones standing still.
My biggest complaint is how Marshall got a ton of their rebounds: going over our backs. I lost count of how many times we actually had good position underneath, and a Marshall player literally climbed over our backs to for the ball, and the refs didn't call them ONCE. Not ONE SINGLE OVER THE BACK CALL ALL NIGHT. And to make matters worse, twice it happened that after the whistle was blown, THEY CALLED THE FOUL ON US!!! WE got called for having them go over our backs!!! WTF?!?!?!
Marshall's offense was basically to throw up a horrible shot that bricked so badly that the ball clanged off at a weird angle, and then gobble up the rebound and lay it in. And they ran that play to perfection all night. The only reason we were even in the game in the first half was by scoring in the paint and shooting 67%. Once we cooled off, the game was basically over.
Not our worst game of the season, but we needed to play a hell of a lot better than we did to beat this team, and it didn't happen. Between the rebounding woes, the horrible officiating, and a barrage of treys by Marshall's bench, this game was never really in doubt.
Depressing way to open C-USA play, to say the least.
