It's been a while since I joined this board, and I've really enjoyed chatting with you guys for the past year or so! Anyway, I just thought I'd ask the question once again that I joined in order to ask... do any of you have, or know anyone who has, some of the older Miner games on tape? I'd love to find some vintage footage of some of the teams of yesteryear, just as a sort of archive of UTEP basketball through the years. In particular, I'd love to find at least one game featuring that team from the 2000-2001 season, with Genie Costello, Chris Neal, Leonard Owens, and Brandon Wolfram. I found a guy on YouTube who posts a bunch of vintage Miner game clips on his site, but when I contacted him regarding full copies of the games, he said he's too busy to make copies and doesn't really know how... check out his YouTube page if you're so inclined: www.youtube.com/user/ljmcman?feature=watchAnyway, I'll shut up now. Just trying to get my hands on any other classic games and relive the Miner Magic of old... get back to me if any of you have access to such materials. GO MINERS!

I am pretty freaking sure I have games from 2000-01. Think I have Washington, Texas Tech, WAC Tournament vs Tulsa and probably that shitty NIT game versus Memphis. Brandon Wolfram told me the players quit during that game and it shows. Let me look for them. I think I promised to look for them when I gave you the Wyoming tape. Hopefully you will hear from me soon.

Thanks a ton, MinerMan. I'd gladly take whatever games you have, burn then to DVD's, and get you the tapes back along with the dvd's. We could meet up at a game like last time. Let me know!
Anyone else out there have anything to share?

That's great, MinerMan! I'll take anything you have. Are you going to the tournament games this week? If so, let me know and maybe we can meet up at one of them.

I love the Miners, but I would never spend money to watch this awful tourney. Wish I could have made tonights game though.

You didn't miss a thing, MM. We looked awful out there. Didn't rebound well, didn't shoot well, got burned on screen and rolls repeatedly, and missed clutch shots every time CSU made one. Terrible free throw shooting by us and ridiculously good by them sealed the deal. One of the poorest performances I've seen thus far this year. To make matters worse, the refs appeared to be totally guessing on the majority of the calls, and mostly in the visitors' favor.
My burning question now is, who is the fucking genius that decided we should play a pretty good Colorado State team instead of Arkansas Pine Bluff in the opening round?!?! Now a couple thousand faithful fans will turn out to see us win third place in our own damn tourney, and NOBODY will stick around for the title game. Fucking brilliant scheduling ('scuse my language but I'm pissed).
Let me know when you can get me those games.

Ill get you the list sometime in the next 24 hours.
As far as the scheduling. Tim Floyd was the culprit behind playing CSU on the first night. He said he wanted at least 24 hours to prepare for them. Maybe, but what does it matter? Does any team really prepare for UAPB? Could have had more time to prepare for CSU in my opinion. I think they should do away with the tournament all together. If the best teams you can bring in are middle of the road MWC schools, why even bother?
Schedule a home game against Northern Arizona, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, etc. Then go play a road game against an MVC, Horizon or some other good mid-major team. Better use of 2 games in my opinion.

It was Coach Floyd's call to play CSU in the first round. For RPI purposes, he wanted to make sure he played CSU and avoid playing two teams w/ very low RPI's.
I don't think we played poorly. Especially considering the UTSA and SFA games. CSU just out hustled us in the last four minutes.

Well, I guess I wasn't far off with my "genius" assessment, then... just drop the expletive before it. As far as RPI ranking goes, who really cares? I don't think Floyd was so optimistic as to think we may have a chance at an at-large NCAA bid. In my humble opinion, it would have been better to get over the jet lag from Hawaii by playing a cupcake last night and preparing for the better team tonight. Plus, nothing drives away our fair-weather crowd like losing, and nobody is gonna turn out to see them play the damn consolation game tonight. I take back the insults, but I still think it was a stupid move to play CSU in the opener. I also have to respectfully disagree with you, binks. If we had played half as well last night as we did in Hawaii, there's no way that team would have beaten us. We let them do it with our pathetic rebounding and free throws.

BleedingOrange, no need to take back anything. you were right on. the tournament has become an embarrassment over the past 10-12 years...in the past we had some good teams come into the tourney...but now it sucks...just schedule a good home and home with a top quality RPI team...the attendance was pathetic...DH always wanted to play the first game on the first night...we usually played the weakest opponent and he wanted to scout the second game.

Yeah, I remember that, Strelz. I used to go into the stands and get autographs from the Miners after they had played their game and were scouting the other two teams during the second one. I still have the signatures of Quintan "E.T." Gates and Jeep Jackson that I got during one of those early tourneys.
Just an update: Joe Muench said in his latest article that we scheduled CSU in the first game as part of a home-and-away series we agreed to. Apparently everyone was scared that either the Rams or the Miners would be upset in the first round (uh, not freakin' likely) and we wouldn't get to play them, thus negating the agreement. So instead, now we get to go to Ft. Collins next year to play them in their house. I wonder how godawful the officiating will be when we're NOT in our own gym!!
BTW, they also printed your response to another blogger, MinerMan. It's in today's (Sunday's) EP Times.
I guess it's all water under the bridge now, anyway. The season starts in three days at Marshall. Tough way to open the conference schedule, but a good litmus test going forward...
