I still can't believe there are UTEP fans that still think Mike Price is doing an acceptable job as head coach. Here is why he's not:
Mike Price is 9-21 in November and December since he came to UTEP.
9-21! His teams ALWAYS take a dive late in the season.
UTEP's last conference road win was on 10/04/08 @ Southern Miss.
Since that date, CUSA East bottom feeder UAB has 5 conference road wins. Even Duke has 2 conference road wins since that date! This is just playing sad. UTEP plays at Rice and Tulane in front of 15,000 (if they're lucky) and other drab venues, not at Michigan, Boise St, Texas Tech, Tennessee, LSU, etc.
2005 - UTEP lost 3 straight to end the season and lost to 2 teams with losing records to blow the CUSA West Title
2006 - UTEP lost 5 of their last 6 games
2007 - UTEP lost their last 6 games
2008 - UTEP lost 4 of their last 6 games
2009 - UTEP lost 4 of their last 5 games
2010 - UTEP lost 3 straight to end the season and 6 of their last 7 games
6 Straight last season collapses and even in 2004, UTEP lost its regular season finale against a losing Tulsa squad. What makes anybody think it is going to be different this year?
From 2004-2010, Mike Price has 40 wins. 26 of those wins are versus FCS or teams with losing records. 5 of the 40 wins are against teams with a .500 record. Only 12 of those 40 wins were on the road and 8 of those are against teams that ended up with 3 wins or less!
Mike Price hasn't beaten anybody. All he has done is beat marginal teams at home, and hasn't had a big road victory since they beat Fresno St in 2004. He can only beat crappy teams on the road and aside from beating "#12" Houston at home, he has no Top 25 wins or big home wins.
"UTEP can't afford anybody to fire Mike Price."
I love that quote. Not only that, some people say we can't do any better than Price. UTEP's home attendance has fallen off big time since 2006. Season ticket sales have dropped since 2008 and are so embarrassing that UTEP hasn't (and probably will not) release the figures this year. People have given up on Price and UTEP continues to lose money at the gate because he continues to be employed. UTEP's enrollment continues to increase and CUSA signed a new TV deal worth more money. UTEP has money to fire Mike Price and hire his replacement, they just don't want to do it.
The only way next years season ticket sales don't go up is if UTEP hires one of Price's sons. I wouldn't put it past them, but I think its unlikely at this point. That will increase attendance and will led to more revenue from parking, concessions, etc.
He might be one of UTEP's best coaches ever, but he is not cutting it anymore and keeping him on board any longer is a slap in the face to fans that want more. If you're happy with no championships, bowl wins, wins vs BCS teams, etc, then Price is your man.
Fact: NMSU has the same amount of bowl wins as UTEP over the last 40 years.
Fact: NMSU has beaten 3 BCS conference teams since 1988 (Kansas, Arizona St, & Minnesota). UTEP has ZERO.
UTEP needs a coach that can win bowls and can beat BCS conference teams. Mike Price needs to go, don't you agree?
