Admittedly, I couldn't go to the UCF game because of work. But I'm kinda glad I didn't take a day off to see that shit...
I only caught the second half, and had to turn the radio off when we were down 15 with about 4 minutes to go. But from what I heard from Teisch and Yellen, we came out in the first half thinking this would be a cake walk, and stepped right into a bear trap. It would appear that a lack of defensive effort and rebounding (WHAT'S NEW) led to a big first half deficit, and we played just poorly enough in the second that our attempted comeback happened too late to be completed. After the game, assistant coach Johnson mentioned the fact that they found out earlier today that UCF's 7-foot center was out with a concussion, and apparently that made us feel a hell of a lot more confident than it should have.
I can't comment any more than that, being as I neither saw nor heard the majority of the game. All I know is our NCAA hopes have basically shattered like glass. An at-large bid was a long shot before this; now it's an impossibility.
Yeah, I know people will say, "All we have to do is win the C-USA tourney, and it's here in our building." But does anybody else feel like we're in somewhat of a tailspin right now? With two of our toughest games (Memphis and at SMU) still staring us in the face? Not to mention the fact that we've likely blown our shot at the league title and the top seed in the tourney. Southern Miss can realistically finish 12-4, their toughest remaining games being UAB at home and at Tulsa. That means that even if we manage to win out and finish 12-4 too, they still have the head-to-head tie-breaker and the title.
I cannot believe how quickly things have gone downhill. I gotta admit, I'm not feeling confident AT ALL that we can finish the year the way it appeared we would just two weeks ago. I really hope I'm wrong. Dead wrong. But somehow my gut says I'm not.
I wonder whose gym we will travel to in the opening round of the friggin' NIT....
