I've seen multiple bracket projections and most of them have Colorado St getting an at-large bid. They are currently 16-7 and 7-3 in the MWC. They have an RPI of 41 and play in a good conference. They have really bad losses to Sam Houston St and Hampton. Why are they getting at-large consideration and UTEP is lucky to be projected as the CUSA champ?
Here's why: The MWC is better overall and has been for years than CUSA. While CUSA is having its most competitive year, it didn't make any noise in the non-conference. UCF did, but they are in 11th place. Another reason is Colorado St schedules effectively in the non-conference! Home games against Northern Colorado, Drake, and Fresno with road games against Colorado, Kansas, Denver, and San Francisco. Not to mention neutral court victories over Ole Miss and Southern Miss.
UTEP needs to play more games outside of the Don Haskins Center. UTEP needs to play power teams even if they don't ever come to El Paso. Its better for the players, coaches, and it gets UTEP more media attention.

Very nicely crafted argument for strengthening Utep's schedule.
Until you mentioned Colorado St., I never realized what was going on.
Thanks for posting this.
