I think he will get the job today...he is older and will stay at utep...they can get him cheaper than tim or billy...he will need to bring in a recruiter.

I hope this isn't true. Who cares if he is supposedly what the returning players want. They're only going to be here for one more season. Who cares? UTEP needs to think about its long-term future. Fuck Bob Stull if this is true.

This is complete crap! With names out there like Floyd and Gillispie, Dickey is what were are left with. I thought Seton Hall's choice was bad, but this takes the cake. I hope Bob Stull's days are numbered if this is true.

How is Randall Dickey supposed to put butts in the seats. Here is UTEP's one chance for the city and its fans to get really excited about it and they come up with this. Pathetic. Hope its an early April Fools Joke.

First off, let me apologize about my prior report which said Randall Dickey is the new head coach at UTEP. Bob Stull texted me that they haven't made a decision yet and I believe him. However, it wouldn't surprise me if Dickey still becomes the new UTEP coach. This is where we stand right now:
A. Tim Floyd - I believe that he is UTEP's top target and might have been offered the job by Stull. However, Floyd's father-in-law is very ill in Louisiana, and Tim's wife Beverly is reluctant to leave their home and move to El Paso. The proximity might be just too much for them to relocate. Despite some reports, I do not think that Floys is "playing" UTEP to get back a better college coaching job.
B. Randall Dickey - the fall-back choice if Floyd says no to UTEP. Hiring Dickey makes sense for so many reasons--he's a good bench coach, can recruit (Caracter, Stone, and Polk) and likes El Paso. He comes from a coaching family and would bring his brother James to UTEP. James was the head coach at Texas Tech from 1991-2001.
C. Billy Gillispie - the former Miner coach is said to be interested in returning to UTEP and even signing a contract this time around. However, UTEP might not be as open to Billy returning to El Paso. No word yet on if Billy has even interviewed for the job.
D. Mystery Candidate - This is the big Wild Card. I have been told that there is a mystery 4th candidate who could get the job (Barbee was a late interview and hire).
I know UTEP was hoping to wrap this up by today, but might need a few more days before they can make a decision. I'll update this as soon as I haave more information.

Thanks for passing this along... with the added tidbits on the particulars for each candidate.
Very interesting reading...
Especially in Floyd's case because I thought maybe something came out of the NCAA investigation at USC.
For Realm's part... I believe the player's are making their input known that they want Randall Dickey. Much like the football players, back in 1990, letting the administration know that their choice is Gary Nord.
Nord looked like a winner his first year while those players were there. But after that first year... Nord's coaching tanked.
Realm believes Randall Dickey would be Nord II.
The Miner fanbase will take a lot... BUT they will NOT like this decision one bit.
Realm...

Randall Dickey apparent frontrunner for head UTEP men's basketball coach By Bill Knight / El Paso Times Posted: 03/29/2010 12:08:40 PM MDT Randall Dickey (Courtesy UTEP athletics department) ?? UTEP athletics profile: Randall Dickey EL PASO -- UTEP assistant basketball coach Randall Dickey appears to be the frontrunner for the head coaching job, but a new contender from outside the program also is in the hunt. The Times has learned that a late applicant is under consideration. People familiar with the search did not divulge his name. Dickey has been on the Miners' basketball staff since 2004. He formerly was an assistant at Oklahoma State under Eddie Sutton. UTEP athletic executives conducted personal interviews in Dallas with two other candidates who no longer appear to be in the mix. They are Tim Floyd, an assistant coach with the NBA's New Orleans Hornets, and Russell Springmann, an assistant coach at the University of Texas at Austin. Former Miners' head coach Billy Gillispie received a telephone interview, an indication that interest in him was mild. The UTEP job opened last week when Tony Barbee took the Auburn job.
