Price needs to choose his battles... smart move would be to keep him out this weekend and use him for Houston.
We'll see what happens this Saturday.
I can't believe he is ready to come back from a separated shoulder... and that he can throw the ball with any kind of zing.
Gotta be "Devine Intervention"....

If UTEP loses to NMSU, then this season will be a total loss. It will definitely be ANOTHER nail in the coffin... but if Lamaison comes back then there could still be a resurrection...

Not sure what to think...
Utep had to go into OT to beat Stony Brook... to me it looked like Lamaison was the 2nd coming of Joe Montana as he practically willed Utep to victory with his arm... This guy is a WINNER !!
That is my heart speaking.
My BRAIN tells me a Division 1 school with 85 scholarships trailed a FCS school with 65 scholarships for most of the game... and just squeaked by because we physically wore them down.
Or did Stony Brook tire themselves out after gaining 299 yards in the first half??
Last Week, New Mexico State was on ESPN's Bottom 10 list.
This week they are beaming with pride after beating Minnesota 28-21 while their coach suffered what appeared to be an epileptic seizure that stopped the final minute of the game for 20 minutes while Minnesota was attempting to tie the game.
So what do I think about this week??
Not sure.
Without Lamaison and possibly missing Utep's best defensive player Germard Reed (neck injury)... things definitely don't look too good.
Our defense is full of holes in the first half... we have no running game.... our offensive line is, well, offensive... we have a new QB (Jay Hall) expected to fill in for Lamaison.
I was semi-confident of a win... but now I just smell blood and I think it belongs to Utep.
This game plays in Las Cruces... so I definitely have to give them the edge.
We'll see... Realm

During Last night's game with SMU, there was an unintentional placement of a clip quoting Coach Patterson as he defended Price and called out El Paso when the fumble happened.
Maybe after watching this a couple of times, Patterson will finally "GET IT"....
Realm couldn't have written it any funnier...

“Based on coming off the offseason and coming into camp, yeah, I’m surprised,” Palmer said, in a phone interview from his home in Cincinnati. Really Jordan??
Your brother Carson is no longer quarterbacking the team and thereby unable to protect his less than capable brother.
A brother with a career NFL QuarterBack rating of 34.4 is surprised ?!?!
The Bengals also announced rookie Andy Dalton(TCU) would start and be backed up with veteran Bruce Gradkowski.
Miner fans may remember Bruce Gradkowski quarterbacking the Univ of Toledo team that killed the Jordan Palmer led Miner team at the GMAC bowl.

Article by Brent Schrotenboer of the San Diego Union-Tribune Mountain West facing financial strugglesLAS VEGAS — Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson rang a few alarm bells Wednesday about the financial struggles facing his league in the shifting sands of college sports. “It cannot continue as it is,” he said. Thompson made his remarks to media gathered for his annual “state of the conference” address in Las Vegas. Among issues he cited: Television: The Pac-12 Conference television rights deal will give each member school about $20 million per year. By contrast, Mountain West member schools this year each will get about $1.5 million as part of a 10-year, $120 million deal TV contract that started in 2006. When that contract ends, it might not get much better because Mountain West markets only cover about 5 percent of the U.S. population, Thompson said. Such a disparity is why Utah and Texas Christian decided to leave the conference for the Pac-12 and Big East, respectively. Brigham Young left for similar reasons and will be unaffiliated with a conference in football. “Does that then mean more people will leave the Mountain West?” Thompson asked. “Well, it’s two-fold. One, have you been invited to go to someplace else? And two, is that who you are? Does it really make sense?” Resource disparity: Traditional powerhouse Michigan recently underwent a $226 million stadium renovation, which included a new press box. By contrast, Mountain West schools have undertaken about $840 million in facility upgrades in 11 years combined. “Michigan’s press box is $200 million. C’mon,” Thompson said. “Our league spent $840 million, but a $200 million press box for one school?” Realignment: With such a disparity in resources between the rich and poor in college football, what can be done about it? Should the poor leagues give up and let the six elite leagues just break off and form their own division without the likes of the Mountain West? “Not yet,” Thompson said. “I think we’re in the mode of ‘sell the boat, go to a smaller college (with) less tuition, take a second job.’ I’m talking real life, whatever it’s going to take to maintain what we have. We have not had those conversations (about the elite conferences breaking away). Knock wood, we won’t have to have them real soon. We may have to have them sooner than we would hope.” One reason the elite leagues might not be inclined to break away to form their own division is scheduling. If teams in elite leagues only played each other, they might cannibalize each other’s win-loss records. “They have to play somebody,” Thompson said. “Who are they going to play?” The Mountain West has had conversations with Conference USA about forming a giant super league. Another idea is having their champions play each other, with the winner possibly getting a berth in a lucrative Bowl Championship Series game. Thompson said the Mountain West wasn’t interested in combining the two leagues but said that having each league’s champion play each other for a BCS berth change might “dramatically” change the structure of college football’s postseason. It’s only an idea right now, though. In the meantime, Thompson said there have been no further talks about the Mountain West expanding beyond next year, when the league loses TCU but adds Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii in football. Rising costs and cuts: In 1999-2000, Thompson said the average athletics budget in the MWC was about $17 million. Now it’s $38 million. Meanwhile, state budget cuts have forced schools to raise tuition, which increases the cost of athletics scholarships. State cuts also have led athletic departments to cut more resources, including San Diego State, which had to furlough coaches and cut 25 full-time jobs in the past three years. The football office at SDSU is down to one secretary and one athletic trainer. "One of the biggest challenges is just keeping the doors open," Thompson said. Solutions: So what can anybody do about it? The league is on the verge of earning automatic access to BCS bowl games for 2012 and 2013, just like the six elite leagues. But that may only mean an extra $1 million or so per school, which is dwarfed by the disparity in television revenue between the haves and have-nots. Thompson said he hopes private boosters come through for member schools and that each school’s chief executive stays committed to athletics. For example, about half of SDSU’s $32 million athletics “revenue” comes from student fees and university support, which has been under the command of the university president. Mountain West member Air Force recently raised private funds to open a $15.5 million football practice facility, a sign of hope for Thompson. It was the largest privately funded capital project in the academy’s history. “We’re finding ways,” Thompson said. “They (Air Force) flipped. They got into the rat race.” Yet the challenge continues. “We sound like we’re bankers, and it’s money,” Thompson said. “Unfortunately, it is.” Notable --Thompson called for stronger penalties for those who cheat NCAA rules. He cited the recent rash of major violations and investigations among top programs and said he was concerned that discipline wasn’t tough enough to keep them from becoming repeat offenders. There have “got to be debilitating penalties or it’s going to continue,” he said. --Thompson said the Mountain West may add the Hawaii Bowl to the conference bowl lineup next year, when league membership increases to 10. --A year since Colorado and Utah left their conferences for the Pac-12, Thompson recalled how the Mountain West was waiting out the shifting sands to see if it might land Colorado or other Big 12 teams. At the time, several Big 12 teams were considering joining the Pac-10, which would have destroyed the Big 12 and left many of its members looking for new conferences. How close did the Mountain West get to adding Colorado, Kansas State or Iowa State? “Colorado had gone (to the Pac-10) on Thursday (June 10, 2011), and we added Boise State on Friday morning (June 11).,” Thompson said. “Are Kansas State and Iowa State going to need a spot? That was very much alive that weekend.” LINK: www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jul/27/mountain-west-facing-financial-struggles/

I think it is absolutely brilliant and cuts, point by point, why football recruiting is Utep's Achilles heel.
Something, I think, can be fixed if we'll make it a priority.
Congrats to Miner Illustrated for a damn nice write-up AND presentation...

I agree Bleed... things are always tenuous until the player finally arrives on campus at the start of the school year.
I Googled January and saw his list of colleges: Cal, Arizona, USC and UCLA. All schools in the PAC.
His choices indicate a preference to playing in a league where he'll be seen by friends and family. I can't blame him.
I'm glad he gave Utep his verbal... but that doesn't count for much.
What does count is that his dad played for Utep back in 88-99...
Coach Floyd does seem to have a strong recruiting connection with the California area and I think our chances are excellent that we will be keeping Anthony January.
I'll keep the faith...

MinerMan,
I'll give you that we stink in Football and people aren't too excited to be playing us...
BUT Basketball is a different story...
I honestly believe the stories that other schools are not interested at playing a tough school like Utep and at a tough venue like the Don.
I'm not even talking about the high cost of airplane travel.
By all means I would like to see Utep schedule a higher quality of opponent... but should we still schedule them if it means having to play a series where we are put to a disadvantage(playing 2 for one for example).
Having to play patsies like the schools you just named is testament to the rep our basketball program has.
I think we're in GREAT hands with a fighter like Coach Floyd and I believe the scheduling issues will be fixed as well.

I fear Coach Billy Gillispie is making his mark and has made it that much harder for Floyd / Utep to grab good players...
Good thing we're not playing each other(even though I think it would be a GREAT idea with a LOT of fan interest).
You gotta hand it to Texas Tech... they don't lose a step in either Basketball OR Football.
Football Head Coach Leach has to be let go... Coach Tommy Tuberville steps right in.
Coach Pat Knight can't coach at the level of his dad... in comes Coach Billy Gillispie.
Sigh... why isn't El Paso setting the pace like Texas Tech??
Surely there are avenues of revenue that haven't been explored yet...

Josh Tauaefa graduated from Lake Dallas High School, where he helped lead his team to a 10-3 record as a senior. He committed to the Gophers in September of 2009 over offers from Houston, Louisiana Tech, UNLV, and UTEP.

Do you guys think Delk will have a greater impact on their recruiting than Greg Foster will on ours? I never really followed Delk's pro career but Foster played in two Finals... Interesting question.... Delk was ALL-Everything at Kentucky and got a lot of Nation wide press. Foster's rep definitely wasn't as well known.
Honestly, I would have to give it to Delk... but for Utep's purposes, I like having Foster at Utep.
Now after saying that... I don't know about Foster's penchant for recruiting players to Utep or his ability to teach...
Those abilities will determine which one has the better impact...

Culpepper has his size working against him on his quest for the next level... while Stone's size is working FOR him.
Lot of teams seem to be infatuated with Stone's size for a guard... and in his camp try outs he has raised his stock with his 3 point shooting.

eltrojano... along side Bleed, I also wish to convey a strong welcome to you as well.
You may or may not know... Tim FLoyd began his coaching career at Utep under Don Haskins in the 1980s as an assistant coach. So he is NOT an "unknown" to us Miner Fans. Indeed, we know each other very well.
Floyd has morphed himself so that he has taken the best from Coach Haskins... and updated the offense so that it is more fast paced.
Why is this important?? Because today's athlete's seem to be more interested in the offensive side of basketball and put the defense on the back burner.
Coach Floyd works around this by getting inside athlete's heads and stressing the defensive side of basketball by holding "playing time" as the proverbial carrot to get their attention.
Coach Floyd also stresses "Team"... and has shown this by dismissing players who seem to put themselves first... apart from the team. He doesn't play favorites because he has already dismissed players who could have contributed a lot to last year's team.
Those of us who follow Miner basketball are pleased with the caliber of player that Floyd is bringing to Utep... and we have no doubt that we are in good hands.
Indeed... the feeling around here seems to be "In Floyd, We Trust".

The Phoenix Suns didn't make the playoff this year after looking like they were a shoo in to make it before the NBA All Star game. They simply tanked in the 2nd half of the season and the inconsistent play of Steve Nash is a big reason why.
Nash and his wife of 5 years, Alejandra Amarilla, have 2 kids and welcomed their 3rd in Nov 2010... the next day after the birth, Steve Nash filed papers for dissolution of the marriage. Rumor is that the father is former Suns player Jason Richardson who was abruptly traded away to Orlando in December soon after the baby's birth.
In April, Nash went public and demanded the Suns trade him to another team. Once again, behind most successful meltdowns... is a woman.

Ran into my brother at one of the clubs in San Diego and since he lives in L.A.... I asked him what happened to the Lakers bid for a 3 Peat!!
He had some interesting things to tell me that I had not heard before so I thought I would pass them on... because some of it you may not have heard either.
First, he reminded me that the 1980s Legacy of the Detroit Pistons couldn't be contested on the court. Off the court was a different matter because rumor has it that the Pistons were derailed by a woman. Supposedly Vinny Johnson was boning the wife/girlfriend of Dennis Rodman. When the details came out, it created a rift between players on the team causing a noticeable decrease in team chemistry.
Detroit never exhibited the same intensity on the court again and soon the team underwent personnel changes... but they never regained the talent level that they needed to win the championship.
2nd he reminded me that in the 1990s, the Dallas Mavericks had one of the more talented backcourts in the NBA with Jason Kidd and Jimmy Jackson. Jason had to be traded away because team chemistry was going down the toilet when both Kidd and Jackson were rumored to be dating the same woman... singer Toni Braxton. The story goes that Braxton came to a hotel that the Mavericks were staying at to pick up Kidd for a date, but left with Jackson. Kidd demanded a trade in an attempt to get away from Jackson and was shipped out to the Phoenix Suns.
Two players labeled untouchable by the Mavericks... were done in by a woman.
